Northwest women keeps postseason hopes alive with win at SBU

Abby Henry poured in 24 points to keep Northwest Missouri State’s postseason hopes alive with a 75-61 win over Southwest Baptist Tuesday night from the Meyer Sports Center.

The Bearcats earned the season sweep of SBU improving to 6-21 on the year and 4-15 in league play. SBU falls to 9-16 on the year and 4-15 in league play as Northwest now needs a win and a SBU win over Missouri Western on Saturday to claim the final spot in the MIAA tournament.

Henry’s 24 point effort led all players as the Bearcats shot 47 percent from the field. The senior guard was also 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the win.

Northwest took a narrow 33-32 lead into halftime. From there it would be all green and white.

In the second half Northwest continued to build its lead to as many as 19 points before SBU cut the lead to single digits at the 5:16 mark. However, free throws from Shelly Martin and Henry pushed the Northwest lead back to double figures to close out the 14 point win.

The Bearcats’ bench outscored SBU 25-15 while the green and white Bearcats also got 36 points inside, outscoring SBU in the paint by 14 points.

SBU placed three players in double figures led by Brittney Dukes with 14.

Northwest closes out the regular season on Saturday as they will honor three seniors while hosting last place Missouri Southern. Tipoff from Bearcat Arena is set for 1:30 p.m.
