The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team defeats Washburn in game one, 9-5, on Friday in Topeka.
The Bearcats improve to 13-12 overall and 9-5 in conference while the Ichabods falls to 8-17 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
Key Northwest Statistics
– Northwest scored one run in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the ninth inning. Washburn scored two runs in the second, one in the fifth and two in the eighth inning.
– The Bearcats had nine runs on 13 hits and no errors. The Ichabods had five runs on nine hits with one error.
– Mondesi Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and two doubles.
– Hudson Bilodeau was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
– Kevin Handzlik finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored,a triple and two RBIs.
– Derek Hussey went 2-for-3 with one walk, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored.
– Landon Figg was 1-for-5 with a double.
– Aaron Barratt went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk.
– Matt Schingel was 1-for-5 with one RBI.
– Logan Rycraft finished 1-for-4 with one run scored.
– Joseph Hietpas threw 5.1 innings, allowed two earned runs, five hits and he struck out ten batters.
Key Northwest Innings
– Barratt singled to center field with two outs in the top of the second inning and Schingel brought him in with a double to left field to put the Bearcats on the board.
– To start the fourth innng, Handzlik singled up the middle and then advanced to second base. Barratt drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch and Handzlik moved to third. Hussey singled through the left side to score both Handzlik and Barratt to make the score 3-2.
– After an out, Gutierrez walked and Figg doubled down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Hassman grounded out to shortstop and Gutierrez scored on the play to increase the Bearcat lead.
– Hussey drew a two out walk and Rycraft moved him to second with a single to right field. Bilodeua singled through the right side to score Hussey from second and put Rycraft on second. Gutierrez kept the inning alive with a double down the left field line to score Rycraft and conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.
– Gutierrez started the top of the ninth inning with a double down the left field line and after an out, Luke Hassman drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Tim Olson came in to pinch run for Hassman and quickly scored with Guiterrez on a triple to center field by Handzlik. Handzlik would then score on a wild pitch to give the Bearcats a 9-5 lead.
