KC Delays Vote On Truancy Measure

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A city council committee in Kansas City has delayed taking a vote on a measure aimed at cutting down on truancy in the city.

The Kansas City school district and police sought the measure, which is a daytime curfew law intended to deter children ages 7 to 16 from loitering unsupervised during school hours.

The city council’s Public Safety Committee on Wednesday delayed their vote for a month.

Kansas City and Hickman Mills school officials said the measure would help them deal with serious discipline and attendance problems. Dozens of home school parents and children have turned out to oppose the proposal. They said they worried that police could stop their children just for going to a library or museum unattended.
