ST. LOUIS (AP) — Two people are in custody in the shooting of a St. Louis police officer who apparently interrupted a burglary at his home.

The 45-year-old sergeant was off-duty when he was shot in the stomach around 12:30 p.m. Thursday at his home in the St. Louis County village of Riverview.

The sergeant underwent surgery and was recovering Thursday night.

St. Louis County Police spokesman Rick Eckhard says two men ran from the scene. They were arrested after a search by more than four dozen officers using K-9 units and a helicopter.
