Rare Baseball Card Up For Auction

ST. LOUIS (AP) – An auction was scheduled to begin Tuesday for one of the biggest prizes in all of sports collectibles.

Bill Goodwin of suburban St. Louis owns the firm handling the auction for the 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card.

The card itself is owned by a Houston businessman who declined to give his name.

The small card was released in cigarette packs, but only about 200 were made – either because Wagner didn’t want to market tobacco products to children, or because he wanted to be reimbursed for his image.

Of the 200, only about 60 still exist, and the card being auctioned by Goodwin is in better shape than most of those.

Goodwin believes the card could fetch up to $1.5 million. The online auction continues through April 19.
