A motorcyclist has died from injuries he suffered in a high-speed pursuit by law enforcement. A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper was injured in the collision at US-71 west of Savannah Friday afternoon.
According to an online crash report, 19-year-old Dalton Smith of St Joseph was fleeing from Country Club Village police at about 1:35 p.m. Sergeant Sheldon Lyon of Troop H says the pursuit reached speeds over 100 mph.
State trooper Travis Williams pulled onto US-71 with his emergency lights flashing, but the motorcyclist crashed into Williams’ patrol car.
Smith was flown by helicopter ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Williams was also hurt, and was taken to Heartland for treatment of injuries that were described as minor.
The accident closed traffic for hours on US-71.
