Spill At Springfield Mustard Factory Sends Three To Hospital

A chemical spill at a factory in Springfield that makes French’s mustard has sent three people to a hospital with minor injuries.

Assistant Fire Chief David Pennington blamed the injuries on sodium hydroxide, an agent commonly used for industrial cleaning.

Early reports Thursday suggested as many as 20 people might have come in contact with the corrosive chemical.

But only three required decontamination and treatment for minor extremity burns.

A ruptured pipe is blamed for causing the spill.
