Does Missouri Need a Thanksgiving Nanny?

Jeff Roorda, D, Barnhart

A state representative wants to make it illegal for stores in Missouri to start Black Friday on Thanksgiving. Democrat Jeff Roorda of Barnhart calls his bill the Thanksgiving Family Protection Act. He says it’s a legitimate use of government power to regulate business hours. Critics say Missouri does not need a Thanksgiving Nanny.

The bill would require retailers to stay closed on Thanksgiving except for pharmacies, gas stations, and restaurants. Roorda came up with the bill after an online petition was signed by over 300-thousand people telling Target to keep Thanksgiving for families.
