Response To Hurricane Sandy Impressive, But Local Red Cross Need Continues

The Midland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross posted some impressive information on its response to Hurricane Sandy.

One month following the storm, the Midland Empire Chapter has raised $129,619 and had 30 deployments of volunteers.

Three volunteer have deployed a second time for three weeks assignments.

Local officials say the local need has not declined.

The Midland Chapter began its Holiday Campaign of Hope fund drive on November 10th. The Midland Empire needs to raise $185,000 during the Holiday to meet its annual budget.

“So many of our donations have been directed to Hurricane Sandy, we are concern about our local fund drive for local families. Every day, our volunteers see the devastation and loss of families facing a disaster in our communities, but they don’t make national news”, states Kevin Kirby Executive Director of the Midland Empire Chapter.

In spirit of the holiday, if you would like to make a gift to support the work of the American Red Cross, donations may be sent to the American Red Cross, 401 North 12th Street, St. Joseph, MO 64502.

To date, the Red Cross has spent $110 million to help families impacted by the storm.

$72.9 million for Food and Shelter providing more than 78,900 overnight stays and more than 7.4 million meals and snacks.

$30 million to provide and distribute 5.2 relief items ranging from gloves, flashlights, hygiene kits to shovels, cleaning supplies and trash bags.

$3 million operating disaster vehicles, equipment and warehouses.

$2.2 million for physical and mental health services which includes physical and emotional support and replacement of prescriptions, eyeglasses and medical equipment.

$1.85 million for individual casework for special needs and long-term recovery.
