If you think you’re a master of icy roads while behind the wheel, consider this story.
A Wyandotte County Sheriff’s deputy was killed and his passenger injured when he lost control on an icy road late Friday night.
Major Randy Edward Beery, 36, died at the scene. His passenger, Katrina Ashley Kobe, 26, was taken to KU Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities say Kobe was seriously injured, but she is expected to survive.
According to a report on the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, Beery’s Crown Victoria was southbound on Shawnee Drive just north of County Line Road when it hit an area of packed snow. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree.
Vehicle 1 was southbound on Shawnee Drive in Lane 2 of 2. Vehicle 1 travelled on an area of packed snow on the roadway. Driver 1 lost control, went off the right side of the road, and struck a tree.
The vehicle was Beery’s county take-home vehicle, but he was not on duty when the crash occurred.
