ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs will fire coach Romeo Crennel Monday, but not general manager Scott Pioli, at least not now. Numerous news agencies are quoting league and team sources with much the same information.
The Chiefs finished 2-14, after losing to the Denver Broncos Sunday. Kansas City earned the top pick in the 2013 NFL draft. while the Broncos earned the top seed in the AFC playoffs.
In the preseason, the Chiefs had been predicted to finish near the top of the AFC West. But injuries and ineffective plays derailed them.
Crennel was promoted by Kansas City to replace Todd Haley during the 2011 season. He has had just one winning season in five years as an NFL head coach and is 28-55 in his coaching career.
Pioli is 23-40 with Kansas City in four seasons. He joined the Chiefs in 2009 after nine seasons with the Patriots, where he helped to build New England’s dynasty.
