Captain Kirk’s Recommendation Might Tip Scales In Moon-Naming Contest

The planet Vulcan doesn’t exist. But one of Pluto’s moons could soon carry that name.

The name “Vulcan” might actually soon find itself attached to a real-life celestial body.

That thanks in large part to an actor who played a space captain who was routinely vexed by an alien from the fictitious planet of the same name.

One of Pluto’s moons could soon be named Vulcan, after an online naming contest. The voting (here) ends at noon Eastern time on Monday.

The two moons themselves were discovered in 2011 and 2012, and were named “P4” and “P5.”

The voting for the Greek mythology-themed names has been running since mid-February, with more than 75,000 votes cast within the online ballot’s first 24 hours.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk on the 60s Sci-Fi series “Star Trek,” jumped into the fray, suggesting “Vulcan” as a name for one of the moons.

Kirk’s longtime foil Mr Spock hailed from the fictitious planet Vulcan.
