The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced the installation of an advanced radiation monitor at a weigh station along I-44 in Joplin, Missouri.
Colonel Ron Replogle, MSHP Superintendent, says the monitor can detect and identify radiation.
Replogel says the advanced spectroscopic portal will enhance Missouri’s radiation and nuclear detection capabilities without adding to the workload of the Highway Patrol’s employees.
The installation is the result of a cooperative research and development agreement between the state of Missouri and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. There was no cost to the state of Missouri for this monitor, which went online January 28, 2013.
According to the announcement, officials chose the D-4 East weight station because of the high volume of truck traffic on that stretch of interstate highway.
