Griffon softball gets swept at No. 18 Fort Hays State

MWSUThe Missouri Western softball team fell twice on Friday afternoon in Hays, Kan. against the 18th ranked Fort Hays State Tigers. In game one the Griffons lost a heart-breaker 2-1 in 12 innings and then fell in the night cap 11-3 in six innings. The Griffons 12 game winning streak ended as they fall to 24-10 overall and 8-4 in MIAA play.

Game 1
FHSU 2, MWSU 1 (12 innings)

The Griffon softball team lost a heart breaker in the opener against the 18th ranked Tigers from Fort Hays State falling 2-1.

The Griffons had six hits against FHSU’s pitcher Maddie Holub but stranded runners on base in nine of the 12 innings stranding 12 total runners.

The two teams played scoreless softball until the 10th inning when the international tie-breaker was put into effect. The Griffons struck first when Sarah Elliott tripled in Taylor Anding giving MWSU the 1-0 lead.

Bre Fleschner then reached on a dropped fly ball but got called out for leaving first base early. Tiffany Gillaspy then ropped a line drive up the middle that went off the pitcher to the third baseman which ended the inning.

In the bottom of the 10th Bishop got the first two outs but Bianca Adame doubled down the left field line scoring Katlyn Kern sending the game to the 11th.

In the 11th the Griffons stranded runners on second and third and in the bottom of the 11th Holub hit a line drive to center field which was caught by Maegan Roemmich. Roemmich then tossed Courtney Dobson out at third trying to advance.

The game moved to the 12th where MWSU could not get a run across. In the bottom of the 12th Jenna Lang hit a bouncer to shortstop which scored Adara Erickson from third giving FHSU the win.

Bishop gave up just three hits in 11.1 innings of work. She did not give up an earned run while striking out 11 and walking five. She falls to 12-4 with the loss. Michelle Stevenson had two of the Griffons six hits.

Holub improves 16-1 on the season going all 12 innings giving up six hits while striking out 17.

Game 2
FHSU 11, MWSU 3 (6 Innings)

In game two nothing went well for the Griffons as the Tigers got 14 hits scoring in five of the six innings dropping MWSU 11-3 in six innings.

The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings. The Griffons were able to load the bases in the fourth scoring two runs. They also scored one in the fifth cutting the Hays lead to 9-3.

Unfortunately that was all the Griffons got going as the Tigers scored one in the fifth and one in the six getting the run rule victory. The Tigers improve to 31-5 overall and 11-1 in MIAA play.

Janie Smith falls to 12-4 going just three innings giving up 10 hits and nine earned runs with five walks. Emily MOe went 2.2 innings giving up four hits and one earned run.

Paxton Duran picked up the victory improving to 13-4 for the Tigers. She went all six innings giving up three hits and one earned run. Courtney Dobson led the way with three hits, four runs scored and one RBI for the Tigers.

The Griffons will travel to Kearney, Neb. on Saturday, April 6 for a double header with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
