Mustangs split doubleheader at Ozark Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader in Springfield Monday night as they defeated Ozark in game one, 7-3, before falling in the nightcap, 6-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 3-2 and 2-2 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Michael Schulze led the game off with a home run before the Generals took the lead with two runs in the third.

St. Joseph regained the lead in the fourth inning as Grant Fink hit a solo home run and Payton Scarbrough drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Ozark tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and the two teams stayed that way until the ninth inning.

The Generals fell apart in the ninth defensively as they committed four errors and St. Joe scored four unearned runs.

Shane Segovia had three hits to lead the Mustangs, while Schulze and Fink added two hits each.

Trey Gonsalez earned the win in relief as he threw 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.  Jonathan McCann started the game and gave up three runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

In game two, St. Joseph starter Patrick Brady took the loss as he struggled and allowed six runs and seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work.

Jace Anderson kept the Mustangs in the game with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.  He allowed just three hits and struck out six batters.

St. Joe scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings, but had only six hits in the nightcap.

Shane Segovia, Eric Swain and Kyle Simpson drove in one run each.

The Mustangs continue their five-game road trip Tuesday as they travel to Omaha for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch with the Diamond Spirit.
