A southeast Nebraska woman will serve five years in prison for child abuse in connection with a police pursuit and shootout last February.
Jamie D. Russell Engstrom, age 35, appeared in the District Court of Johnson County, Nebraska, on Monday, August 5, to be sentenced on a charge of Felony child abuse for allowing her daughter to remain in the vehicle during the pursuit.
Engstrom was the passenger in a Ford Focus allegedly driven by her husband, Michael Engstrom during a police pursuit on February 13, 2013 in which two state troopers and three employees of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were allegedly shot at.
She pleaded guilty to child abuse on April 15, for “knowingly, intentionally, or negligently causing or permitting a 14-year-old female [passenger] to be placed in a situation that endangered her life or physical or mental health.” The charge carried a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. Ms. Engstrom was sentenced to 5 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Ms. Engstrom has been continuously incarcerated at the Johnson County Jail since February 13. According to Johnson County Attorney Julie D. Smith, Monday’s sentencing means that she will be transported to the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, Nebraska, to serve her prison sentence.
Her husband Michael Engstrom has been charged with 19 felonies, including five counts of attempted murder in relation to the incident. He has pleaded not guilty, and his case is set for jury trial on September 9 in Tecumseh.
The Engstroms also are charged with a fatal shooting in Topeka, Kansas earlier that day and a subsequent robbery in Pawnee County, Nebraska.
