Authorities in suburban Cleveland, Ohio have captured a man sought for weeks since his escape from custody in Caldwell County.
Brian Adkison was arrested Wednesday afternoon. Police in Westlake, Ohio say Adkison was spotted riding a bicycle by a resident at about 1p.m. eastern time. The resident recognized him and called police.
Officials say he tried to elude officers on his bicycle before fleeing into a nursing home where he was taken into custody.
No one was hurt.
“About one p.m. eastern time a local man spotted him on someone’s bicycle on one of our main thoroughfares,” said Captain Guy Turner of the Westlake Police Department.
“The local media had published several photos of him once we identified him. As soon as he saw the police cars coming he took off on that bicycle.”
“He never really had a chance, because there were at least 20 police officers from five or six agencies besides ourselves that surrounded him.”
Captain Turner says Adkison ducked into a local nursing home at about 1:25 pm est, where the staff also recognized him from published photographs. A staff member at the nursing home called police.
“Fortunately, one of our youngest and fittest officers was right behind him, and after a little struggle we got him arrested,” Turner said. “He didn’t want to give up his hands.”
Turner says Adkison is still not cooperating, refusing to allow officers to take his photograph or fingerprints. But Turner says they can wait.
“Sooner or later he’ll get hungry or want to use the telephone. We have 48 hours to charge him.”
Beyond that, it’s not clear when Adkison will be returned to Missouri to face a multitude of charges in five counties. Until that time, he’s being held in the Westlake City Jail.
“We have some lower grade felonies to address, but nothing like the seriousness of his antics back your way.”
Westlake police were searching for Adkison after he was nearly arrested Tuesday.
After two brief police pursuits, Adkison abandoned a stolen truck and fled on foot. Evidence in the truck identified the driver as Adkison.
The 23-year-old Columbia man was being held in the Caldwell County Detention Facility in Kingston, Missouri on August 10 when he escaped through the ceiling wearing nothing but his boxer shorts. A short time later, a pickup truck was reported stolen nearby.
That truck was recovered near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The truck involved in the pursuits Tuesday was also stolen.
