Emily Campbell, 2013 American Honey Princess visited ParkwayElementary School Tuesday to talk about bees. The whole school met for an assembly where Campbell, dressed in her tiara and sash, told the kids about bees and whythey are important.
Campbell, who keeps bees as a hobby, explained the different types of bees and their roles in a hive. She also talked to the kids about the importance of bees for pollinating food crops. At the end, she took a few minutes for questions.
“I heard about the Honey Princess through an e-mail,” said Dr. Brad Owings, Parkway Principal. “Several of our grade levels study insects, so the assembly fit in really well with our curriculum.
Campbell is speaking to schools in Missouri as part of the National Honey Month tour, where she visits schools and other venues nationwide to talk about bees. As Honey Princess, Campbell serves as a spokesperson for the American Beekeeping Federation.
In addition to Parkway, Campbell visited Hyde, Mark Twain and Lake Contrary Elementary Schools in St. Joseph.
