At least 230 high school students converge on Missouri Western State University on Wednesday for High School Writing Day.
The event celebrates creative writing in Northwest Missouri with workshops, activities, games, and an open microphone reading.
High School Writing Day is the brainchild of the Prairie Lands Writing Project, which is based at Missouri Western.
The group offers programs for teachers and students, including teacher-learning communities, writing groups and retreats, in-service training, youth writing camps and advanced institutes. The PLWP is currently in its 25th consecutive year of operation.
Students are chosen by their teachers for their outstanding writing abilities to attend the event Wednesday. This year’s theme is “Writing for the Gold!” In addition to polishing their writing skills by attending workshops in a variety of genres, students will prepare writing pieces to submit to the Scholastic Writing Awards. By entering the contest, students are eligible to have their work published, be recognized at state and national ceremonies, and receive scholarship funds.
The event is scheduled from 9:00am until 2:00pm in the Fulkerson Center.
