Huett leads Mustangs to win at Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs got back in the win column Monday night after losing at Sedalia on Sunday as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team won at Omaha, 4-2.

The Mustangs improve to 32-9 and 26-9 in the MINK League as their magic number to win the North Division is down to one game over Clarinda, who they’ll play at home Tuesday night.

Monday’s game was scoreless until the ninth inning when Kris Koerper drove in two runs with an infield single as Spiker Helms and Brock Chaffin came in to score.

St. Joe starter Jayson Huett then made his only mistake of the game in the bottom of the sixth as he gave up a two-run home to Ryan Briggs that tied the game.

The Mustangs answered right back with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings as Helms and Landinn Eckhardt each had RBI singles.

Helms led St. Joseph as he went 3-for-5, while Eckhardt and Brent Seifert added two hits each.

Huett (4-0) was the story of the game as he threw a complete-game seven-hitter to get the win.  The Northwest Missouri State graduate struck out six and walked two as he lowered his ERA to 2.55.

The Mustangs are back at Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch against Clarinda.  The game can be heard on ESPN 1550.
