Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Man Hit By Train

Hit by trainSt Joseph police need your help identifying a man killed Saturday morning after he was hit by a train.

Detective Richard Shelton was pursuing leads in the ongoing investigation Sunday.

Shelton describes the victim as a white male wearing a plaid shirt, camouflage pants, a black jacket and white tennis shoes.

He has brown hair and brown eyes, was 5’8″ to 5’11” tall and weighed between 150 and 175 pounds.

Video cameras at a convenience store captured the man staggering across the parking lot, before he crossed Highway 59 near Alabama Street Saturday morning.

At about 6:30am Saturday, police received the call of what was thought to be a traffic accident involving a train. Police later determined the victim had been hit by a train. The incident prompted detours around the freight train for more than an hour Saturday morning.

Detective Shelton says there has been no formal determination of the cause of death. He could not confirm whether the death was an accident or an act of suicide.

“I guess anything’s possible at this point,” Shelton said Sunday. “It’s still under investigation at this time until they can put everything together.”

Shelton says he hopes to have a preliminary autopsy report later this week.

If you have information that could help, call the St Joseph Police Department at (816)271-4777.
