Mustangs lose at Clarinda after rallying from seven-run deficit

The St. Joseph Mustangs had their six-game win streak snapped Sunday night as they lost at Clarinda, 14-10.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team rallied from a seven-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but Clarinda answered back with five runs to put the game away.

The Mustangs gave up a six-run fourth inning and found themselves down 8-1 before beginning to chip away at the A’s lead.

St. Joseph got one run back in the sixth inning and then Shane Segovia capped off a five-run seventh inning with a two-out grand slam to cut the lead to 8-7.

Clarinda scored one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mustangs answered right back and scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Brent Seifert had an RBI single to score Jon Wegener and the game was tied at seven.

That’s when the A’s finally broke loose and scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth.  St. Joe pitchers combined to walk two batters and hit two others.

Jonathan McCann took the loss in relief as he walked the first batter of the eighth inning and he came in to score.

Kyle Jackson began the game but lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs.  St. Joseph used six pitchers in the loss.

Seifert and Mark Robinette led the Mustangs’ 14-hit attack with three hits, two RBI and two runs each.  Wegener and Jordan Guida added two hits each.

St. Joe falls to 37-10 and 31-10 in the MINK League.  They’re off Monday and close the regular season Tuesday at Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m.
