Students at four St Joseph middle schools joined forces to help Second Harvest Community Food Bank provide Thanksgiving dinner to families in need.

“We wanted to help Second Harvest provide Thanksgiving this year,” said Dr. Lara Gilpin, principal at Spring Garden Middle School. “We decided that instead of doing it as a competition between the schools, we would do it as a team.

 

“We are pleased to be able to help our community and our families have Thanksgiving this year.”

Second Harvest is providing 3,500 turkeys, and each middle school had a drive to collect sides. Together, the middle schools collected 2,039 pounds of food. Each school collected two types of sides:

Bode – Pumpkin Pie Mix and Jello
Robidoux – Green Beans and Stuffing
Spring Garden – Chicken Broth and Cranberries
Truman – Cream of Mushroom and Yams

“We at Second Harvest Community Food Bank are always excited to have great partners,” said Aaron Smullin, director of marketing at Second Harvest, “The students that will be helping distribute Thanksgiving boxes did a food drive two weeks before our distribution and now they will get the opportunity to see exactly where their donation is going and who it is helping.”

Students from Spring Garden helped out with distribution. Second Harvest volunteers were expected to be working all afternoon and evening to get the boxes to families.
