Suspect sought in deaths of Kansas mother, children UPDATE

2:40 p.m. Wednesday(AP) — The man suspected in the deaths of a southeast Kansas woman and her three children is being held on a $5 million bond.
Labette District Judge Robert Fleming signed an order Wednesday that gives prosecutors until Dec. 10 to file charges against the 22-year-old man who was arrested late Tuesday. He was arrested late Tuesday in connection with the killing of 29-year-old Cami Umbarger and her children, ages 9, 6, and 4.
It was unknown whether the man had an attorney. The Labette County Jail declined to make him available for comment.
Cami Umbarger’s cousin, Tara Umbarger of Fredonia, said Wednesday that her cousin met the suspect around the end of September and had gone out with him a couple of times. She says he had been stalking her.

–Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s Office confirmed that homicide suspect David Cornell Bennett, Jr., was apprehended Tuesday night in Independence, Kan., by law enforcement officials. The investigation remains ongoing.

 Any criminal prosecution resulting from the investigation will be handled by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office at the request of the Labette County Attorney. No charges have been filed. Any charges that might arise from the investigation are merely accusations. Individuals are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office and other involved agencies are bound by the Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 3.6, Trial Publicity and Rule 3.8, Special Responsibilities of a Prosecutor.

 

 

11 a.m.  Tuesday (AP) — Police in southeast Kansas are investigating the deaths of a mother and her three young children.

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said in a release Tuesday the victims are 29-year-old Cami Umbarger, of Parsons, and her three minor children. The attorney general’s office did not say how the four were killed or provide other details about their deaths.

The attorney general’s office said authorities are seeking a male suspect, David Cornell Bennett, Jr, but no charges have been filed.

Police received a call Monday from concerned co-workers and family members that Umbarger didn’t show up for work.

Parsons police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies are investigating. Parsons has about 10,500 residents and is about 125 miles southeast of Wichita in Labette County.
