(AP) – Last year’s decision to close Jackson County’s only secure residential center for juveniles has brought changes to another juvenile center in the county.

Officials at the Hilltop Residential Center say they are seeing older juveniles with substance abuse and mental health problems since the county closed McCune Residential Center late last year.

Some nonviolent youths who went to McCune are being sent to Hilltop but most juveniles once sent to McCune are now going into the state juvenile corrections system.

Most kids assigned to Hilltop have committed lesser property crimes, failed in one of a juvenile diversion or probation program, or not done well with home counseling or electronic monitoring. Hilltop administrators say they will not take violent offenders.
