Investigation of Orangutan death at KC zoo

A female orangutan that was recently brought to the Kansas City Zoo has died.

The KC Zoo 24-year-old ape named Intan was brought to the zoo last month from Los Angeles for breeding. The animal was found dead Thursday in an indoor holding area.

Zoo officials says the animal likely died of heart failure, but tests are pending.

Sean Putney, director of living collections at the zoo, said the death was unexpected. Orangutans can live 50 years or more in captivity.
