Mustangs win opener at the NBC World Series

The St. Joseph Mustangs opened up play at the NBC World Series at Wichita Sunday night and beat the Plaza Tire Capahas out of Cape Girardeau, 7-3.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team struck first with two runs in the second, added one more in the third and then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

Jordan Guida had a big night as he finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.  Bishop LeBlond graduate Andrew Nellestein added two hits and he drove in two runs, while Mark Robinette had two hits.

Northwest Missouri State graduate Jayson Huett earned the win as he went eight innings and allowed just three runs on six hits.  He struck out seven and walked three.  After Ryan Price allowed two base runners in the ninth with no outs, Doug Shields got the final three outs for his 12th save of the season.

St. Joseph improves to 41-10 this summer and they’ll play in the second round of the NBC World Series Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against the Valley Center (KS) Diamond Dawgs.
