LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Lawrence police say an ad on Craigslist offering to sell a baby for $300 is a hoax.

Emergency dispatchers were called around 5 p.m. Friday after area residents saw the ad on the popular online classifieds site.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports a police spokesman said detectives were able to identify the origination of the post and determined there was no baby for sale.

Police Sgt. Troy Squire says the investigation continues but no charges have been filed against the person suspected of posting the ad.

The ad that was removed Friday evening said the mother was 16 and didn’t want to tell her parents about the child, so she was selling the girl.
