Statement issued Thursday by Amy Blouin of the Missouri Budget Project: “While we have not yet had the opportunity to fully review the so-called tax cut deal between Governor Nixon and Senator Kraus, we are concerned that the proposal may not provide adequate protections for the critical public services and works that strengthen our economy.”
“These services include quality preschool through higher education that provide Missourians with opportunity; mental health, health & child welfare services that help Missouri families who are most in need; investments in public safety for our communities; and investments in our infrastructure for a strong economy.”
“Moreover, while the deal reportedly requires the foundation formula to be fully funded, it may not be protected in an ongoing fashion. Once the tax cuts go into effect, it seems that core education funding could then be reduced.”
“Our state is just now catching up with FY 2008 revenues. Adjusted for inflation, we’re still below the real purchasing power of FY 2000. Is our state really satisfied with the status quo?”
