JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri House committee is considering legislation to block the state’s implementation of national education standards.
Sponsoring Republican Rep. Kurt Bahr says the Common Core Standards take key education decisions away from local school boards. Under his bill, state education officials could not implement the standards unless the Legislature approves.
But Missouri’s Teacher of the Year says Common Core doesn’t micromanage her classroom. Jamie Manker, a social studies teacher at a suburban St. Louis high school, says the standards will help students prepare for today’s world.
The committee’s chairman says the panel won’t vote on Bahr’s legislation until next week.
Most states have adopted the Common Core standards, which are benchmarks developed by a national consortium for reading, writing and math.
