Voters in Hiawatha, Kansas rejected a sales tax increase to pay for a new, city-owned theater and other recreation projects.

The vote was 446 to 303 against the half-cent sales-tax measure, which also would have funded economic development efforts.

In Fairview, Kansas, there were council seats and the mayor’s office on the ballot, but no candidates. Incumbent Mayor Joe Rettele received the only write-in votes for that office, and has agreed to serve another term.

Margaret Wikle and Levi Gunn were to the top write-ins for the council seats.
