Kindergarten registration and screening continues in the St Joseph School District.
Every incoming kindergarten student in the St. Joseph School District participates in a developmental and health screening at their home school prior to starting kindergarten.
At screenings, nurses check students’ physical and developmental progress. Physical screenings include vision, hearing and dental, as well as height and weight. Nurses are able to talk directly to parents at the screening, so the parents and nurses can address any health needs or concerns with the school at that time.
Screenings also check students’ developmental progress, which allows teachers to prepare for the incoming kindergarteners, and helps parents know how to help their kids prepare for kindergarten between now and the start of school.
“The screenings are really the first step in building relationships between parents and the school,” said Debbie Kunz, Parents as Teachers Coordinator. “That relationship is critical to the success of the child.”
Parents should visit the “Destination Kindergarten” page on the District’s website to sign up for a time to screen their child. Find the page under the “Teaching and Learning” tab at sjsd.k12.mo.us. Parents can also contact the home school to register.
Screenings will take place at the child’s current 2013-2014 home school. More information on current and future boundaries is available under the “Parents” tab at the District’s website.
If parents are unable to attend their school’s screenings, they should contact the school secretary to schedule another date for screenings.
