Suspect In Mall Disturbance Detained For Shooting

SJPD patchSt Joseph Police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting last week, but so far no charges have been filed.

Captain Jeff Wilson tells us there was a disturbance at the East Hills Mall on Sunday, in which several individuals were allegedly harassing another man.

Police responded, and Wilson says none of those individuals was arrested except the “victim.”

Wilson says the suspect is being held in the Buchanan County Jail on an unrelated parole violation warrant. There is no bond in that case.

At about 4:30am on Sunday, June 8, a 25-year-old St Joseph man was shot. At the time authorities said Ty Smith heard the gunfire and then realized he’d been shot.  This happened near 10th and Angelique.

Smith was taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center, where officials said he suffered from a collapsed lung. A bullet slug had lodged near his heart, making surgery a dangerous proposition.

The suspect was wanted on an investigative warrant in the shooting of Mr Smith, and has not been charged with a crime.  No charges were filed in connection with the mall disturbance.
