If you heard the emergency sirens in Atchison County Monday you were likely curious as to why they went off. The county’s 911/Emergency Management Department says a cold core funnel cloud appeared near Rock Port at about 2:30 pm.

A cold core funnel is spawned during non-severe storms and can occur when you get a tightly wrapped rush of rising air. They can appear as funnels.

Cold-core funnels rarely reach the ground, and if they do, are very weak and rarely cause any destruction.
