OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The man jailed following an apparently racially motivated Kansas bar shooting was wearing a safety smock meant to keep him from harming himself during his first court appearance.

Adam Purinton is charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the Feb. 22 attack in Olathe, Kansas, that killed one Indian man, wounded another and hospitalized a stranger who tried to intervene.

A public defender on Monday waived a formal reading of the charges against Purinton, who was seen in the courtroom through closed-circuit television wearing a green smock.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Master Deputy Rick Howell, says suspects who make statements during initial jail processing that could suggest they might harm themselves are required to wear the smocks until mental health professions say otherwise.

Howell would not disclose what Purinton said at the time he was being processed or whether he is considered a suicide risk.

The man jailed following an apparently racially motivated bar shooting last week waived a formal reading of the charges Monday and was appointed a public defender.

Adam Purinton, 51, of Olathe, appeared by closed-circuit TV before a Johnson County District Court judge on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. According to witnesses, Purinton yelled “get out of my country” at two 32-year-old Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, before he opened fire at Austin’s Bar and Grill in the Kansas City suburb on Wednesday evening.

Kuchibhotla was killed and Madasani injured. A third patron, Ian Grillot, 24, was wounded when he tried to intervene.

Public defender Michael McCulloch declined to comment. Purinton’s next court appearance is set for March 9.

A Missouri bartender told a 911 dispatcher that a patron said he killed “two Iranian people” just hours after a shooting 70 miles away at a suburban Kansas City bar left one Indian man dead and another hurt.

In a recording of the 911 call made early Thursday, the bartender at the Applebee’s in Clinton, Missouri, is heard saying the man made her promise she wouldn’t call police.

Fifty-one-year-old Adam Purinton was arrested soon afterward. He’s charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting in Olathe, Kansas, that some witnesses said was racially motivated.

The bartender tells the dispatcher that the man initially said the shootings occurred at a gas station, not a bar.

She says the man asked if he can stay with her and her husband.

Kansas bar attack survivor says he’s ‘grateful’

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A man who was wounded while trying to intervene in a suburban Kansas City bar shooting that left an Indian man dead and another wounded says he’s “grateful” the attack is bringing the community together.

The University of Kansas Health System released a video Sunday of an interview with 24-year-old Ian Grillot, of Grandview, Missouri, who is recovering after a bullet went through his right hand and into his chest. Some witnesses described the Wednesday night shooting in Olathe, Kansas, as racially motivated.

Grillot said he had to do something because there were families and children in the bar when the gunfire erupted. Grillot, who is white, also says it is “awesome honestly to be able to give people a hope that not everybody hates everybody.”

One of three men shot at a bar in suburban Kansas City spoke at a weekend vigil, saying “I wish it was a dream.”

The Kansas City Star reports 32-year-old Alok Madasani told a crowd of hundreds at the Ball Conference Center in Olathe, Kansas, on Sunday that “what happened that night was a senseless crime and that took away my best friend.”

Madasani’s friend and co-worker, 32-year-old Srinivas Kuchibhotla, was killed in Wednesday night’s shooting at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe. Another patron, 24-year-old Ian Grillot, also was wounded in the shooting.

Madasani said the shooting was “an isolated incident that doesn’t reflect the true spirit of Kansas, the Midwest and the United States.”

Fifty-one-year-old Adam Purinton is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face charges of murder and attempted murder.

Columbia creates sanctuary for migratory monarch butterflies

monarch-699553_1280COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Volunteers in Columbia, Missouri, have been working to create a sanctuary for millions of monarch butterflies that pass through the state as they migrate to and from Mexico.

The Columbia Missourian reports that efforts to plant milkweed and other native flowers on park land were boosted earlier this month when Columbia became the 16th city in the state to join the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.

On a recent Saturday, volunteers spent four hours cutting bush honeysuckle with hand saws, piling up the debris and applying herbicide to kill an invasive species on the five-acre field.

Native seed, including milkweed and up to 40 different native flowers, can be planted once the field has been cleared of unwanted plants that out-compete native species, perhaps as soon as 2019.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The BTK serial killer’s daughter is writing a book about dealing with the emotional trauma of discovering that her father had killed 10 people.

The Wichita Eagle reports Kerri Rawson says she hopes the book help people cope with anxiety, post-traumatic stress, betrayal and depression. Rawson says she experienced all those things after her father’s 2005 arrest.

Rawson, who lives in Detroit, says writing the book is helping her.

Thomas Nelson publishing, which specializes in Christian books, has expressed interest in Rawson’s book.

Police investigators who arrested Dennis Rader believed that Rawson and the rest of Rader’s family didn’t know about his crimes committed between 1974 and 1991.

Rader called himself BTK, which stood for “bind, torture, kill.” He is serving a life sentence in prison.

Kansas City minimum wage question on August ballot

BallotKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City residents will vote in August on whether to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour.

The Kansas City Council agreed Thursday to comply with a Missouri Supreme Court order and put the petition initiative on the Aug. 8 ballot.

The Kansas City Star reports the proposal would increase the current $7.70 minimum wage to $10 per hour by Sept. 1 and gradually to $15 per hour by 2022.

The initiative is backed by civil rights activists, urban core ministers and other social justice advocates.

The Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association and many business groups oppose the measure.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled in January that because petitioners gathered enough signatures, their measure should go to Kansas City voters. It could face legal challenges if it passes.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has approved more than $54,000 for remodeling the Capitol office of new Lt. Gov. Mike Parson.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Republican lieutenant governor has spent about $8,500 on new furniture and more than $46,000 on updates, including new hardwood flooring, wall repairs, replacing wiring and new kitchen appliances.

The updates come as Republican Gov. Eric Greitens has warned that Missouri’s budget is broken and has deepened the mid-year budget cuts made by his predecessor, Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

Parson has also requested a $125,000 increase to his current budget, including $35,000 for travel expenses and money for mileage reimbursements.

The lieutenant governor’s spokesman, Tyler Habiger told the Post-Dispatch that the office hasn’t been updated since former Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder took office in 2005.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — The wife of a man who was killed in a shooting at a suburban Kansas City bar said she wonders what the U.S. will do to stop hate crimes against minorities.

Sunayana Dumala spoke at a news conference Friday organized by Garmin, where her husband, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, worked before he was shot to death Wednesday in an attack at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe that witnesses could have been racially motivated.

Adam Puriton, of Olathe, is charged with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first degree murder in the attack, which also left two men injured. He has not been charged with a hate crime.

Dumala says she was concerned about shootings in the U.S. and wondered if they should stay in the country, but her husband said “good things happen in America.”

She also said reports of bias in the country make minorities afraid of being in the country. She says she wants an answer to one question — “Do we belong here?”

A bartender at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas, said Purinton used “racial slurs” before he started shooting Wednesday night as patrons were watching the University of Kansas-TCU basketball game on television.

JCPenney to close up to 140 stores

jcpenneyNEW YORK (AP and Post) — JCPenney said it will be closing anywhere from 130 to 140 stores as well as two distribution centers over the next several months as it aims to improve profitability in the era of online shopping.

The closures, announced Friday, represent about 13 percent to 14 percent of the company’s current store count, and less than 5 percent of total annual sales. The company did not identify if the St. Joseph location would be part of the closures. The company said it plans to release a full list of planned closures in mid-March pending notification of all affected personnel. Nearly all impacted stores are expected to close in May.

The news came as JCPenney posted a profit in the fourth-quarter compared to a loss a year ago.

The company posted quarterly sales of $3.96 billion, down 0.9 percent from $3.99 billion a year ago.

Revenue at stores opened at least a year was down 0.7 percent.

JCPenney is joining other department stores like Macy’s who are shrinking its footprint amid challenges in the industry.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — A St. Louis County man has been found guilty of looting a Foot Locker store during riots that followed the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 30-year-old Steven Martin of Jennings was convicted Wednesday of second-degree burglary for stealing shoes on Aug. 11, 2014.

The crime occurred during riots after a white Ferguson police officer fatally shot Brown, who was 18, black and unarmed, on Aug. 9, 2014. A St. Louis County grand jury and the U.S. Department of Justice eventually cleared officer Darren Wilson of wrongdoing, and he resigned in November 2014.
