Rolfzen twins, Nebraska volleyball stars, join German club

riggertNebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska volleyball standouts Amber Rolfzen and Kadie Rolfzen have signed professional contracts with the powerful Dresdner Sportclub 1898 in Germany.

The university announced their signings on Thursday.

Amber Rolfzen earned her second AVCA All-America honor as a senior in 2016 and was an All-Big Ten selection for the second straight season. Kadie Rolfzen was a two-time first-team AVCA All-American. She became only the second four-time AVCA All-American in program history after earning third-team accolades as a freshman and sophomore.

The twins helped lead the Cornhuskers to the national championship in 2015 and a Big Ten championship and NCAA final four in 2016.

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Nancy Walton had career highs of 14 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks and No. 24 Oklahoma won its 12th-straight Big 12 Conference opener 84-54 over Kansas Thursday night.

The 6-foot-9 freshman, who has a block in every game for the Sooners (10-4), made 6 of 9 shots but was 2 of 6 from the foul line in her first start. Insect fatal to ash trees found in southwest Missouri

Emerald Ash BorerLEBANON, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Department of Conservation says a beetle that is fatal to ash trees has spread to southwest Missouri.

The department says the emerald ash borer was recently found in Laclede County. It is the first time the insect was found in southwest Missouri. It has now been found in 31 Missouri counties, with most confirmed cases in southeast Missouri, Kansas City and St. Louis.

The small, metallic green beetle attacks only ash trees. The insect’s larvae burrow into the bark of the trees, killing them within three to four years.

The insect was first found in Missouri in 2008. It likely entered the state through infested firewood.

Officials have cut down thousands of healthy ash trees in an effort to slow the insect’s spread.

US slaps sanctions on Russia, expels 35 diplomats

White House LogoWASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has imposed sanctions on Russian officials and intelligence services in retaliation for Russia’s interference in the U.S. presidential election by hacking American political sites and email accounts.

The State Department also has kicked out 35 Russian diplomats from its embassy in Washington and consulate in San Francisco, giving them and their families 72 hours to leave the U.S. The diplomats were declared persona non grata for acting in a “manner inconsistent with their diplomatic status.”

Obama said Russians will no longer have access to two Russian government-owned compounds in the United States, in Maryland and in New York.

Russian officials have denied the Obama administration’s accusation that the Russian government was trying to influence the U.S. presidential election.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russia’s goal was to help Donald Trump win — an assessment Trump has dismissed as ridiculous.

Kansas State beats Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl

riggertKansasStateHOUSTON (AP) — Kansas State was unbeatable against teams from Texas in the regular season, and that didn’t change on Wednesday night in the Texas Bowl.

Jesse Ertz threw for 195 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores in Kansas State’s 33-28 victory over Texas A&M. He had 67 yards rushing to give him 1,012 this season.

The victory improved the Wildcats to 5-0 against teams from the Lone Star State this season after they downed Texas Tech, Texas, Baylor and TCU earlier this year.

“I think that’s a really cool thing to accomplish,” said Ertz, who was named MVP. “It gives the fans some bragging rights.”

Ertz had a 79-yard touchdown pass and scoring runs of 1 and 5 yards to help give Kansas State its fourth straight win and first bowl victory since the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

Nebraska snaps No. 16 Indiana’s home winning streak at 26

riggertNebraskaBLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Glynn Watson Jr. scored 26 points and Tai Webster had 21 Wednesday night, leading Nebraska to a stunning 87-83 upset of No. 16 Indiana.

The Cornhuskers (7-6, 1-0) snapped Indiana’s 26-game home winning streak by finishing with their highest point total of the season in the Big Ten opener for both.

Indiana’s last loss at Assembly Hall was to Michigan State on March 7, 2015.

Robert Johnson finished with 19 points and Thomas Bryant had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Hoosiers (10-3, 0-1).

Indiana appeared to have seized control when it took a 42-35 lead early in the second half.

But the Cornhuskers answered with a 13-2 run and rebuilt a seven-point lead with 9 minutes to go.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — University of Kansas students are being offered buttons through the school’s library system that are meant to make their preferred gender pronouns clear.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that various University of Kansas Libraries employees also are wearing the buttons.

Library leaders say it’s part of the library system’s “You Belong Here” marketing effort targeted at luring undergraduates and ensuring they feel welcome, including transgender students.

Gender-identity buttons have cropped up elsewhere in the interest of inclusion. They were doled out at the start of this semester at Vermont’s Champlain College, home to a new Women and Gender Center. Students and teachers at the University of Vermont also have worn name tags and made business cards with their preferred pronouns.

Kansas State faces Texas A&M in Texas Bowl

riggertKansasStateHOUSTON (AP) — Texas A&M is entering the Texas Bowl as the favorite, yet the Kansas State Wildcats are looking to improve their winning streak to four games in the matchup of old Big 12 foes.

The Aggies, meanwhile, are also looking to cap the season on a positive note after losing four of their last six games following a 6-0 start. Kansas State is in its seventh straight bowl game and the Aggies are appearing in a bowl for a school-record eighth straight season.

The key matchup pits Aggies star defensive end Myles Garrett against the Wildcats’ offensive line. This will likely be the final college game for Garrett, the junior consensus All-American who some predict will be the top overall pick in 2017 draft.

Garrett struggled with injuries this season but still managed to pile up 8 and a half sacks and 15 tackles for losses.

For Kansas State, defensive end Jordan Willis is considered key. The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year led the conference in sacks with 11 and a half, which tied a school record.

Dispute settled over degree offerings from Missouri schools

graduation, diploma, collegeST. LOUIS (AP) — A recent report by a Missouri task force says the state’s public universities and community colleges should not stray from the types of degrees their institutions can grant unless they have a good reason to do so.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Missouri lawmakers asked the task force, made up of 16 state higher education leaders, to address the issue after a dispute between the University of Missouri System and Missouri State University.

Missouri State officials were hoping to change a statute that controls which doctoral programs the Springfield university can grant and prohibits it from offering professional degrees, including medical and law.

The report says research and professional degrees are exclusively the role of the four University of Missouri schools and that 12 community colleges should stick to granting associate degrees and certificates.
