Target recalls nearly 180,000 dressers that can tip over

Target dresser recalled.

NEW YORK (AP) — Target says it is recalling nearly 180,000 dressers because they can tip over and pose a risk to children.

The Minneapolis retailer said Wednesday that it has received 12 reports of its Room Essentials four-drawer dressers falling over or collapsing. Two 3-year-old children were struck by a dresser, but no injuries have been reported.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says customers should stop using the $118 dresser immediately and return it to any Target store for a full refund.

About 175,000 of the dressers were sold in the U.S., and 3,000 were sold in Canada.

The dressers, which were sold at Target Corp. stores and Target.com between January 2013 and April 2016, came in three colors: black, espresso and maple.

Missouri teenager says teacher told her she was too ‘busty’

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri teenager says a high school teacher told her she was too “busty” and that “plus-sized women” need to shop at stores that sell larger clothing.

An attorney for Kelsey Anderson said in a statement released Tuesday that the confrontation happened last Friday when the 17-year-old was sent to the office at Joplin High School for a dress code violation. The statement says the teacher also told Kelsey that “smaller busted women could get away with more than larger busted women.”

Anderson says she was “mortified.” Her attorney, Elizabeth Turner, said in the statement that “body shaming isn’t something to take lightly.”

The Joplin School District said in a statement that it doesn’t consider staff comments “about students’ bodies appropriate” and is investigating whether district policy was violated.

Missouri man who conned women in porn scheme sentenced

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City-area man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for persuading two dozen women to have sex with him by saying they were rehearsing for pornographic movies.

Mario Ambrose Antoine, of Raymore, was sentenced Wednesday for wire fraud. Prosecutors said most of Antoine’s victims were in financial trouble and he promised to pay them thousands of dollars to appear in porn films that would be available only on private websites overseas.

The Kansas City Star reported that Antoine told the women they had to “audition” first. None of the women was ever paid.

If the woman complained, Antoine threatened to send compromising images of them to their family or friends. In some cases, he did send the images to friends, boyfriends or employers.

Partners in Primary Care to open senior-focused medical centers in Kansas and Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Kan. & KANSAS CITY, Mo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep 13, 2017–Partners in Primary Care (Partners) is bringing innovative, senior-focused primary care to Kansas and Missouri with four medical centers planned to open next month.

Partners facilities will allow patients to receive many of their primary care needs, such as physician services, treatment, diagnostic testing, basic laboratory services and immunizations, conveniently in one location.

Each center will be staffed by board-certified physicians and care teams who have been specially trained to treat the senior population. These new centers will specialize in serving patients with Medicare Advantage. While some doctor’s offices may be limiting the number of Medicare Advantage patients they see, Partners is focused on this demographic and hopes to attract patients who may be feeling unsatisfied or underserved in their current situation.

Partners will work with patients and their families to provide support, remind patients of screenings and exams, thoroughly explain medical information and advocate for patients when communicating with specialists, hospitals and Medicare plans.

To improve medication adherence and streamline the communication process between doctors and patients, three of the four centers will have a retail pharmacy located within the clinic location. The pharmacy aims to provide Medicare Advantage and senior-patients with clinical support in the same building as their physician’s office.

In addition, each center will feature an activity center offering health education classes, fitness demonstrations and various activities.

The four centers—which will open in October—will be located in:

Independence: 19401 East 39th Street South, Independence, MO 64057
Wyandotte: 7527 State Ave, Kansas City, KS 66112
Mid-Town Kansas City: 301 E Armour Boulevard, Suite 2 East, Kansas City MO 64111
Olathe: 16575 W. 119th Street, Olathe, KS 66061

“The local community is in need of compassionate and personalized quality medical care that meets the needs and priorities of recipients of Medicare Advantage and the health care of seniors,” said Sue Lamb, Market Vice President of Partners in Primary Care. “We’re delighted to bring our innovative services to the Missouri and Kansas senior communities.”

The number of seniors in Missouri is expected to grow over the next several years to exceed 20 percent of the state’s population by 2030. 1 The senior population in Kansas also continues to grow, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that nearly 25 percent of the population in Kansas will be over the age of 60 by 2030. 2

To meet the rising need for health care delivery for residents, Partners has hired more than 100 employees in Kansas and Missouri to staff its four new innovative primary care centers. Partners is part of a larger family of primary care centers with more than 60 locations in Florida, South Carolina and Texas, along with another center scheduled to open in North Carolina later this fall. All Partners facilities specialize in offering services to recipients of Medicare Advantage.

Public forum scheduled on Tyson Food proposal in Tonganoxie

TONGANOXIE, Kan. (AP) — Three state lawmakers who represent parts of Leavenworth County have scheduled a public forum to discuss a proposal from Tyson Foods Inc. to build a massive poultry processing complex near Tonganoxie.

The forum comes amid opposition to the plant from Tonganoxie residents. The $320 million plant is expected to bring 1,600 jobs to a town of about 5,000 residents.

Opponents say the plant could also bring smells, perhaps double the size of the school district and cause environmental problems. The Lawrence Journal-World reports residents also are upset that discussions about the proposal were kept secret until it was announced last week.

Sen. Tom Holland and Reps. Jim Karleskint and Willie Dove will co-host the forum at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cheiftain Park in Tonganoxie.

Missouri lawmakers return to Capitol for session on vetoes

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers are set to reconvene at the state Capitol to consider bills vetoed by the governor.

But it’s unclear if the Republican-led Legislature will have an appetite Wednesday to override any of GOP Gov. Eric Greitens’ vetoes.

It’s also unclear if there’s enough support among lawmakers to call themselves into a special session to address other issues.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Parson called for a special session to discipline a senator who expressed hope on Facebook that President Donald Trump is assassinated. He also wants lawmakers to address cuts to services for the elderly and disabled.

Three-fourths of lawmakers are needed to call for a special session.

House Democrats also want to discipline a lawmaker who posted on Facebook that he hoped whoever vandalized a Confederate monument is hanged.

Union representing black officers urges officer’s conviction

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A police union that primarily represents black officers in St. Louis is calling for the conviction of a white former officer accused of killing a black suspect.

The Ethical Society of Police said in a statement Tuesday that its board believes evidence in the case against Jason Stockley warrants a conviction. But the organization also says it does not condone violence if Stockley is acquitted.

Stockley’s trial ended last month, but Judge Timothy Wilson has yet to rule. Activists have threatened civil disobedience that could include shutting down highways, airports or businesses if Stockley is acquitted in the 2011 death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

The case has reignited racial tensions in a region still healing from the 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

Police: Baby who died may have been left in vehicle

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Authorities say a 1-year-old boy who died after police responded to a report of a child not breathing at a St. Louis day care may have been left inside a vehicle.

St. Louis County police said in a news release that officers responded around 6 p.m. Monday to the Casa Dia Montessori school. The child was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Montessori said in a statement that the boy was unresponsive in his mother’s van when she arrived there at the end of the day. The statement described the death as a “terrible accidental loss.” Police say the boy may have been left in a vehicle for “an extended period of time.”

An autopsy is planned for Tuesday. The boy’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Registered sex offender charged with hospital assault

Dave Alan Saffeels
MSHP Sex Offender Registry

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A registered sex offender has been charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in a Springfield hospital while she was visiting a woman who had delivered twins.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dave Saffeels was charged Saturday with nine felonies, including child molestation, stemming from allegations that he assaulted the 11-year-old and a 2-year-old girl. The Springfield News-Leader reports he is jailed on $500,000 bond. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

The probable cause statement says the older girl was repeatedly assaulted in August in a patient room of Cox South Hospital, where Saffeels also was a visitor. Cox spokeswoman Kaitlyn McConnell says the hospital wasn’t aware of the allegations at the time.

Saffeels was registered as a sex offender because of a 2002 conviction for sexually abusing a 6-year-old.
