He was taken into custody and is now being treated at a Des Moines hospital.

Martin was single. Beminio was married with children.

Parizek says Greene is suspected in the killings but hasn’t yet been charged.

Six Missourians indicted in online scam to set up robberies

Internet computerKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Prosecutors say six Kansas City-area residents are facing federal charges for allegedly using online dating advertisements to set up armed robberies.

The Kansas City Star reports three of the defendants were charged in June. On Tuesday, a federal grand jury indicted those three and three others.

Prosecutors say the suspects placed ads on sites such as Craiglist, Backpage and Skout. People who answered the ads were robbed at gunpoint.

Those indicted were 32-year-old Kenneth Sexson and 33-year-old Nicole Covey, also known as Nicole Waguespack or Nicole Preston, both of Sugar Creek; 35-year-old Sage Harrison, 21-year-old Devon Davis-Aumua, and 23-year-old Serina Campos, all of Independence; and 34-year-old Ray Mahurin, of Blue Springs. They are charged in an 11-count indictment from armed robberies in the Kansas City area.

Another earthquake in Oklahoma is felt in St. Joseph

PAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has shaken north-central Oklahoma, hitting the same area where a record-setting 5.8 magnitude quake struck two months ago.

The earthquake occurred at 11:27 p.m. Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the epicenter was near Pawnee, about 70 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

Pawnee Police say that preliminary reports show no significant damage.

According to social media reports, the quake Tuesday night could be felt as far away as Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri.

An increase in magnitude 3.0 and stronger earthquakes in Oklahoma has been linked to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. State regulators have ordered some disposal wells to be permanently shut down and others to reduce the amount of wastewater they return underground.

Midwest economic survey suggests slowdown to continue

hay, farmOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A monthly survey of business leaders suggests the economy will continue slowing in nine Midwest and Plains states, in part because of manufacturing weakness.

The Mid-America Business Conditions Index report released Tuesday says the overall economic index for the region dropped to 43.8 in October from September’s 45.5.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says “weakness among manufacturers linked to agriculture and energy continue to weigh on regional economic conditions.”

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth in that factor. A score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Trial underway over man’s 2011 stun gun death in Ferguson

hammer-802300_1280ST. LOUIS (AP) — A federal trial is underway in a wrongful-death lawsuit against Ferguson police over the 2011 stun-gun death of a naked, unarmed black man.

Testimony began Tuesday in Jason Moore’s family’s case against the St. Louis suburb, its former police chief and officer Brian Kaminski.

The lawsuit says the 31-year-old Moore was suffering from a psychological disorder when police confronted him as he ran naked down a street yelling “God is good” and “I am Jesus.”

The lawsuit alleges Kaminski used excessive force by repeatedly using a stun gun on Moore. Defense attorneys say Moore was combative and didn’t comply with officers’ commands.

Moore died three years before the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black and unarmed, thrust Ferguson into the spotlight over police treatment of minorities.

Authorities ID 3 victims found dead at rural Kansas home

Harvey County sheriff patchHESSTON, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have identified the victims of a deadly shooting in rural central Kansas as a registered drug offender, his girlfriend and a friend.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that the victims were 33-year-old Travis Street, 37-year-old Angela Graevs and the couple’s Newton friend, 52-year-old Richard Prouty. The bodies and the couple’s unharmed, crying 18-month-old were found Sunday outside a home in a rural area south of Moundridge and west of Hesston.

The owner of the home told The Wichita Eagle on Monday that he had been in the process of evicting Street and Graevs because of issues that included property damage. Records show Street had drug, theft and burglary convictions in Harvey and McPherson counties.

Investigators have said the victims were targeted and not victims of a murder-suicide.

Authorities say victims shot outside Kansas home were targeted

Harvey County sheriff patchHESSTON, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say three people found shot to death outside a rural home in central Kansas were targeted and not victims of a murder-suicide.

Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton says the victims found Sunday were a 37-year-old woman and two men aged 33 and 52. Walton says the two younger victims were a couple who were friends with the other man. Their names haven’t been released.

Walton said Monday that a passing motorist reported seeing bodies on the driveway of the home in Harvey County, and that there didn’t appear to have been a struggle.

The sheriff says an 18-month-old child found unharmed inside the home is now in the custody of relatives.

There has been no word about arrests or charges.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting.

Elections official says ballot selfies are legal in Kansas

voteTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An official with the Kansas secretary of state’s office says it has determined that ballot selfies are legal in the state after all.

Elections Director Bryan Caskey said Monday that the office has re-examined a state law that makes it a felony to disclose a ballot’s contents and concluded it applies to election officials but not voters themselves.

Ballot selfies are illegal in some states. Federal judges have struck down bans in Indiana and New Hampshire.

A secretary of state’s office spokeswoman said earlier this month that taking selfies at a polling place is legal but “a picture of the actual ballot violates Kansas law.”

Caskey said repeated questions led the secretary of state’s office to further review the law.

He says, “There’s not a law that prohibits it.”
