OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors opened the first-degree murder trial against a former doctor by arguing he committed four Omaha killings to avenge his firing from Creighton University Medical Center.

Prosecutors outlined their case Monday against Anthony Garcia, who is charged with stabbing to death the young son of two medical doctors and the family’s housekeeper, and then killing another Omaha doctor and his wife.

They say the killings were motivated by Garcia’s long-simmering rage from being fired from the medical school’s residency program in 2001.

Prosecutor Brenda Beadle argued, “This is a case about revenge.”

Garcia’s attorney says prosecutors lack witnesses or physical evidence.

Later Tuesday, Dr. William Hunter described finding the body of his son and the family’s housekeeper, saying “It didn’t seem real to me.”

Bass pro shops logoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Outdoor gear giants Bass Pro and Cabela’s will combine in a $4.5 billion deal announced Monday.

Bass Pro is paying Cabela’s shareholders $65.50 cash per share. The deal creates uncertainty about jobs in Cabela’s home state of Nebraska. The combined companies plan to keep some operations in Sidney and Lincoln, Nebraska, but it’s not immediately clear how many jobs might be lost.

Bass Pro CEO Johnny Morris says he hopes to continue growing the Cabela’s brand alongside his own Springfield, Missouri, based chain.

Capital One will take over running Cabela’s credit card unit as part of the deal. Activist investment firm Elliott Management began pushing for significant changes at Cabela’s last fall. Cabela’s employs about 2,000 people in the western Nebraska town of Sidney, which has about 7,000 residents.

FEMA says May storms in Kansas don’t warrant declaration

FEMATOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Administration has denied an appeal from Kansas officials for a federal disaster declaration for several counties affected by May storms.

FEMA says the state’s original request for a federal declaration for the public assistance grants was denied. Several counties were included in that request.

Many areas of the state were hit severe weather that included thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding during the last week of May.

The state appealed FEMA’s initial decision on Aug. 31. FEMA has denied the appeal, reaffirming its original findings that the damage caused by the storms did not warrant a major disaster declaration, which would have granted broader authority for federal agencies to help the region recover.

Kansas agency approves settlement in Hiawatha boy’s 2013 death

TFI Family Services logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas officials have approved the state’s $100,000 share of $412,000 settlement Friday in a federal lawsuit over the death of a 4-year-old northeast Kansas boy.

The State Finance Council agreed Friday to pay the money to Naomi Boone, the mother of the late Mekhi Boone. The boy’s father, Lee Davis, is serving nearly 20 years for second-degree murder in the boy’s 2013 beating death. Naomi Boone has contended that one of the state’s foster care contractors placed the child with Davis while aware that he had a history of domestic violence.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat, says the state is paying the money because it had an obligation to protect the child. Gov. Sam Brownback says TFI Family Services Inc. will pay $312,000.
