OVERLAND, Mo. (AP) — The mother of a 6-year-old St. Louis County girl is demanding answers after the child was placed on the wrong school bus and dropped off alone.

Ritenour School District officials tell KMOV-TV that a series of mistakes are to blame.

Marvin Elementary School first-grader Wednesday Nesbit was placed on the wrong bus Monday afternoon. The driver dropped her off at the wrong stop and left her alone, violating district policy for a student in kindergarten or first grade.

Amy Nesbit says her child was missing for 90 minutes before two women saw her and contacted police, who picked up Wednesday.

An official with First Student, the school bus operator, called the incident unacceptable and says an internal investigation is underway. Ritenour is also investigating what happened.

Kansas drug-smuggling plot may involve over 90 inmates

jail prisonKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal prosecutor in Kansas says a prison drug-smuggling scheme in which six people are charged actually may involve more than 90 inmates and dozens of outsiders who assisted them.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Tomasic recently has told a judge she assumes more Leavenworth Detention Center employees may be charged than the one already being prosecuted.

According to transcripts of the July 21 hearing in Kansas City, Kansas, Tomasic said “new targets” of the investigation are being identified “at an alarming rate.”

The 1,126-bed lockup is run under contract by the Corrections Corporation of America and is separate from the federal prison in Leavenworth.

The case is at the center of a legal storm over privacy rights involving prison recordings of confidential lawyer conversations with clients at the Leavenworth lockup.

Standing Rock Sioux tribal logoBISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says he has contacted the White House and met with North Dakota’s senators in an effort to halt construction of a $3.8 billion, four-state oil pipeline.

David Archambault II says he met Wednesday with North Dakota Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp to “express concerns” about the Dakota Access pipeline.

The pipeline would cross the Missouri River just north of the Standing Rock reservation and also travel through South Dakota and Iowa to Illinois.

Archambault says he is calling for peaceful protests of the pipeline. Archambault and others have been arrested in the past week for interfering with construction in southern North Dakota.

North Dakota transportation officials on Wednesday closed a several-mile stretch of Highway 1806 because of the protest along the road.

Flooding threatens levees in and near Poplar Bluff

Butler County Mo Emergency managementST. LOUIS (AP) — Emergency managers in southeast Missouri are monitoring a levee at Poplar Bluff after torrential rains caused significant flooding along the Black River.

Butler County emergency management director Robbie Myers says a levee breached Tuesday in a rural area near Poplar Bluff, swamping hundreds of acres of farmland but causing only limited damage to structures.

More concerning was the fact that water was overtopping a levee in and near Poplar Bluff, a town of about 17,000 residents not far from the Arkansas border. Myers says that if the levee breaches, 100 people will have to be evacuated.

Butler County received 7 inches of rain over the weekend and Monday, with some reports of up to 11 inches. Thunderstorms are in the forecast again for Friday and Saturday.
