Magnitude 2.3 earthquake reported in southeast Missouri

USGS logoCARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A small earthquake has reportedly hit southeast Missouri.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 2.3 magnitude earthquake hit near Caruthersville late Saturday night. The USGS says the earthquake had a reported depth of about 5 miles.

Small earthquakes are fairly common in southeast Missouri because of the New Madrid fault, which produced massive earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 that could be felt as far away as New England.

Evidence, witnesses cast doubt on life sentence

Lamonte McIntyre

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who has spent 22 years in prison for a double homicide that witnesses swear he didn’t do hopes more than 40 affidavits supporting his innocence will help set him free.

Lamonte McIntyre was 17 in 1994 when he was accused of fatally shooting two men who were sitting in a car in a drug-infested Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

A retired Kansas City police captain who reviewed McIntyre’s case calls the murder investigation “grossly deficient.” A former drug dealer signed an affidavit swearing a different person was paid to kill the men.

McIntyre’s attorney, Cheryl Pilate, says the case has so many flaws no reasonable juror would have convicted her client if all evidence had been presented.

Gathering marks anniversary of airliner crash near Falls City

Braniff tail sectionFALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — Dozens of friends and family members of the 42 people killed in a plane crash 50 years ago in southeast Nebraska gathered over the weekend for a memorial service.

The service was held Saturday morning at the site near Falls City where Braniff Airways Flight 250 crashed the night of Aug. 6, 1966, amid stormy weather.

All passengers and crew members aboard the plane died, and the crash remains Nebraska’s worst commercial airline disaster.

The National Transportation Safety Board blamed the weather for the crash but found the crew could have avoided a storm if it had been alerted about its intensity. The investigation found that the wind ripped the plane apart, causing its fin and one of the tail wings to break loose.

Parts maker ZF recalling 505K transmission control sensors

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Automotive parts supplier ZF North America is recalling 505,000 control sensors in the U.S. because they can make some nine-speed transmissions shift into neutral without warning.

The company says in government documents that the transmissions were sold to several automakers that will issue recalls. But the only one identified was Fiat Chrysler.

ZF says a star-shaped connector on a wiring harness wasn’t crimped properly. That can increase electrical resistance that can shift the transmission into neutral.

The problem came to light in July when Fiat Chrysler recalled more than 323,000 U.S. vehicles to fix the problem.

ZF says a software update will fix the problem.

It was unclear whether the glitch had caused any crashes or injuries. Fiat Chrysler said in July that there were none.

Judge says Missouri must pay $156K in legal fees in clinic suit

Planned Parenthood logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge who quashed Missouri’s push to revoke a Planned Parenthood clinic’s abortion license has ordered state taxpayers to pay more than $156,000 to cover the organization’s legal bills tied to the dispute.

U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey this week ruled that the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services must pay $156,631 in attorneys’ fees and expenses incurred by what now is Planned Parenthood Great Plains.

Laughrey in May sided with the Columbia, Missouri, Planned Parenthood clinic after the state last year tried to revoke its abortion license. The judge concluded that move likely was due in part to “political pressure,” and that the license couldn’t be revoked before its expiration in June.

A spokeswoman for Missouri’s attorney general says that office is reviewing Laughrey’s latest ruling.

Kansas facing steep turnover of school superintendents

kansas flagWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — More than 20 percent of Kansas’ school districts, including some of the larger districts will have new superintendents this fall.

Dale Dennis, deputy education commissioner of Kansas, said 61 Kansas school districts, including Topeka, Olathe, Lawrence and Manhattan, have new leaders this year. Some veteran superintendents in rural districts are also going elsewhere.

The departures follow at least two straight years of record-breaking turnover, which Dennis and others said has taken a toll on districts and the state.

The average tenure for a superintendent in Kansas is about five years.

The Kansas Association of School Superintendents recently stepped up its efforts to mentor superintendents, pairing veteran or retired leaders with new ones and hosting a monthly “Phone a Friend” video conference to share strategies.
