KHP-Patch2.jpgSEVERY, Kan. (AP) — Four people have died after a two-vehicle accident in southeastern Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident occurred Saturday afternoon in Greenwood County, three miles west of Severy. One of the cars went left of the center lane and struck the other vehicle head on before catching fire.

The patrol identified the victims as 72-year-old Arden Lee White and 68-year-old Sheryl Elaine White. Both were from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and were in the car that caught fire.

The two other victims were identified as 49-year-old Stewart Bell and 46-year-old Ann Marie Bell. They were from Moline and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Body found downstream from search area for Wichita boy, 11

WPDWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have found a body downstream from where they’d been searching for a missing 11-year-old boy who fell into a Kansas creek. The Wichita Eagle reports that Wichita police Deputy Chief Hassan Ramzah says the body was found Saturday by a kayaker. Ramzah couldn’t confirm the identity of the body, other than to say it was a male.

Officials say Devon Dean Cooley fell into Gypsum Creek on May 27. Crews have continued searching for the boy, and say the unidentified body was found about a mile downstream from the search area.

Cooley’s family issued a statement late Saturday saying they believe the body to be Devon’s but also acknowledging the absence of official confirmation.

Police say the body likely won’t be identified until a coroner’s investigation is completed.

St. Louis police officer sues again after winning lawsuit

gavel with cashST. LOUIS (AP) — A white St. Louis police sergeant awarded nearly $800,000 over racial discrimination has filed another federal lawsuit claiming he’s been retaliated against for the earlier win in court.

Sgt. David Bonenberger sued claiming a job he sought was awarded to a black woman he claimed was less qualified.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a federal jury in 2013 awarded him $620,000 in damages and $172,000 in attorney’s fees.

His new lawsuit, filed Friday in federal court in St. Louis, claims police officials retaliated against him for suing the first time, violated his right to speak out about the discrimination and violated his right to sue. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

A city spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the city hadn’t been served with the lawsuit.

Missouri bill would protect those who save kids in hot cars

Rep Elijah Haahr
Rep Elijah Haahr
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A bill pending before Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon would protect those who try to rescue children from hot vehicles. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Elijah Haahr, last week said he doesn’t want people to pause before acting to save kids.

People would need to contact police or other emergency responders before breaking in and then wait with the child near the vehicle until responders arrive.

Those individuals could not be held civilly liable for damages after busting into a vehicle. The legislation needs approval from Nixon before it can take effect. The measure received bipartisan support from the Legislature.

But Rep. Brandon Ellington says the bill is not needed. He says rescuers likely wouldn’t face legal action for trying to save kids.

Police ID Kansas City man, woman found shot to death in car

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities have identified the man and woman who were shot to death in a car over the weekend in Kansas City.

Kansas City police said Sunday that 53-year-old Marva L. Amrine and 64-year-old Terrell K. Nance were fatally shot at close range inside a silver Fiat.

The Kansas City Star reports both victims were bus drivers at Kansas City International Airport, according to a statement from a Kansas City Aviation Department spokesman.

Joe McBride tells the newspaper Amrine worked for the aviation department and Nance had recently retired from the department but was working for another company.

Police say they are looking for a newer model black Jeep Wrangler-type vehicle with a black spare tire and silver rim on the back in connection with the Saturday shootings.

Kansas Democrats start petition for special session

Kansas StatehouseTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Democratic lawmakers say they’ve been circulating a petition to force a special legislative session to address the school funding.

The move comes after the Kansas Supreme Court rejected the Legislature’s attempt to enact a constitutionally equitable school funding system. The high court has kept a June 30 deadline for lawmakers, raising the possibility that schools could close if the date passes without further legislative action.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that House Minority Leader Tom Burroughs and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley said in a letter sent Saturday evening to Gov. Sam Brownback that they’ve begun collecting signatures to force the governor to call a special session to find a solution to “equitably fund Kansas schools.”

Many Republican legislators in Kansas are angry with the state Supreme Court’s latest order on school funding. They question the justices’ motives and doubt the court will accept any further fixes from GOP lawmakers. Their views prompted Republican legislative leaders to abandon a push to pass further education funding changes Wednesday before lawmakers formally adjourned their annual session.

GOP Gov. Sam Brownback hasn’t said whether he’ll call a special session.

Some Republican legislators advocated defying the court. They argued that complying with its order would encourage what Sen. Jeff Melcher, of Leawood, called “bad behavior” by the justices.

Kansas attorney general to review judge hostage case

justice-510742_1280TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said it will review the investigation of man accused of holding Finney County’s chief judge hostage.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a statement Thursday that his office will review the investigation into the incident to determine if any criminal charges will be filed. The Finney County Attorney’s Office requested that Schmidt’s office handle the case.

Authorities said the standoff began around 7 a.m. on May 31 when the suspect forced his way into 61-year-old Wendel Wurst’s Garden City home and confronted the man and his wife at gunpoint.

The woman was released, and she called police from a neighbor’s home. The standoff ended peacefully several hours later. Police say the suspect was upset over a custody case that Wurst had handled.
