Cosby charged with sexual assault

bill-cosby-399717_1280NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Bill Cosby has been charged with sexual assault more than a decade after a former Temple University employee told police the comedian drugged and violated her at his home near Philadelphia.

It’s the first criminal charge against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.

The Montgomery County prosecutor announced Wednesday that Cosby had been charged with aggravated indecent assault, a felony. It’s a reversal of a decision by a previous district attorney, who declined to charge Cosby in 2005.

Cosby’s lawyer declined to comment on the case before the announcement. The 78-year-old comedian previously said under oath that he had consensual sexual contact with the woman.

Prosecutors reopened the case as new evidence was unsealed in the woman’s related civil case and dozens of women came forward with similar accusations.

Man pleads guilty to role in several restaurant robberies

court, law,KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man has admitted taking part in a string of armed robberies at restaurants in the Kansas City area.

Federal prosecutors say Isiah Etienne, of Blue Springs, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to participating in the robbery conspiracy, robbery and using a firearm in a crime of violence.

Three other Kansas City-area men have already pleaded guilty in the conspiracy.

The men would wait until the end of the business day when an employee opened a door to take out trash to gain access to the businesses. Prosecutors say they threatened employees to get access to the restaurants’ safes, using an assault rifle.

The robberies occurred in Lee’s Summit, Independence and Blue Springs in November 2014.

Record amount of water released from Table Rock Lake dam

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it is releasing a record amount of water from the Table Rock Lake dam in response to recent flooding.

The Corps says it was releasing 72,000 cubic feet of water per second on Tuesday. The previous record was 69,000 cubic feet per second during floods in 2011.

That means nearly 539,000 gallons are going out of the dam into Lake Taneycomo every second.

Corps spokesman Miles Brown says the lake is still rising, causing more water to rush through 10 spillway gates and the hydropower turbines. He says the Corps currently doesn’t plan to open more floodgates.

The flooding has not affected the Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery directly below Table Rock dam.

Woman pleads guilty in Missouri jail commissary theft

jail prisonSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Springfield woman has admitted she was part of a fraud scheme that stole thousands of dollars from the Greene County jail commissary.

Terri Ann Moses pleaded guilty Tuesday to participating in a conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

An investigation found 731 unauthorized transactions from the commissary account between March 2010 and October 2011. The estimated loss was $266,423.

Moses and another woman paid the bills of up to 175 people in exchange for 50 percent of each individual bill. The money to pay the bills was diverted from the commissary account.

Moses admitted she used the jail’s commissary account to pay her bills and conspired with others to pay bills for profit.

Three other women have been sentenced for their roles in the fraud scheme.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A group of U.S. Postal Service employees in St. Louis have claimed a $1 million Powerball lottery prize.

The Missouri Lottery said in a release Tuesday the eight Postal Service employees matched five of the winning numbers in the Dec. 19 drawing. The winning numbers from that drawing were: 28, 30, 41, 59 and 68.

Steven West, a member of the group of employees who routinely buy lottery tickets together, said he was checking the group’s collection of Powerball, Mega Millions and Lotto tickets, when he noticed one of their Powerball tickets matched five of the six numbers drawn.

The lottery says each member of the St. Louis group will receive about $125,000 before taxes. West says ideas for spending the money range from paying bills to buying property.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Thirteen flood-related deaths have been confirmed in Missouri.

Gov. Jay Nixon announced the new total during a visit Tuesday to Perry County, where a record crest along the Mississippi River is predicted.

Nixon did not give details about the latest confirmed fatalities, but said nearly all of those who died in Missouri were in vehicles that drove onto flooded roadways.

He urged motorists to stay away from roads with even low levels of water because fast-moving current can push cars and trucks off the roadway.

Judge delays trial in lottery jackpot-fixing case until July

lottery-174132_640DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has delayed the trial for a former lottery official accused of fixing jackpots in several states.

Former Multi-State Lottery Association security director Eddie Tipton had been scheduled to stand trial Jan. 6 in Des Moines.

But Tipton waived his right to a speedy trial last week, and his attorney asked for a delay. Judge Jeffrey Farrell last week reset the trial for July 18.

Tipton has pleaded not guilty to charges of ongoing criminal conduct and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege that he used his access to random number generators to fix jackpots in Colorado, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Kansas, and worked with associates to play winning numbers and collect prizes.

A jury in July convicted Tipton of fraud for fixing a $16.5 million Hot Lotto jackpot in Iowa.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — A 21-year-old man is the latest suspect to be accused of assisting in the looting that followed last year’s grand jury decision not to indict a Ferguson police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that St. Louis County prosecutors have charged Donovan Doan of St. Peters with second-degree burglary and misdemeanor stealing.

Investigators allege Doan stole beers on Nov. 25 of last year during looting of the Dellwood Market.

Investigators have been releasing surveillance video and images of the looting and say it may take years to identify and charge people in the looting of shops in and around Ferguson.

Online court records don’t show whether Doan has an attorney.

Missouri lawmakers renew push for photo ID for voters

vote-here-id-requiredJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Missouri will try again in 2016 to require voters to present photo identification at the polls.

Lawmakers pre-filed measures to change the state constitution and state law to require photo ID for voting.

Senate sponsor Will Kraus says photo ID could prevent fraud by individuals impersonating other voters. Kraus is running as a Republican for Missouri secretary of state in 2016.

Democratic Secretary of State Jason Kander says he’s not aware of a case of voter impersonation in the state.

Kander’s office in 2013 estimated about 220,000 registered voters would lose the ability to vote if photo identification is required.

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri sheriff says four soldiers from another country who were temporarily stationed at Fort Leonard Wood are among the six people who have died in flooding in the state.

Pulaski County Sheriff Ronald Long said in a statement late Sunday night that a witness saw a car drive into a flooded roadway a day earlier. It was swept downstream. First responders found two men inside the sedan who apparently had drowned, and the bodies of two other men who had been in the car were found Sunday.

Long says the victims were “international soldiers” who were temporarily stationed at the central Missouri Army base for training. They were not immediately identified, pending notification of their families by the U.S. State Department, and the statement did not give their nationalities.

A message seeking further information was left with the base’s media affairs department.

Long says it’s possible that a fifth person was in the car because an acquaintance of the soldiers’ is missing.

The statement says the other two people who died in flooding were the occupants of a vehicle that tried to cross a flooded road.
