Missouri Alumni Association to revive Black Alumni Network

University of Missouri campusCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The University of Missouri Alumni Association is responding to requests and forming a Black Alumni Network.

The announcement follows the recent resignation of University System President Tim Wolfe after weeks of student protests over the racial climate on campus. Missouri Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin also resigned.

Chelsea Drake Marks, a 2012 graduate, told The Columbia Daily Tribune that she and other Missouri alumni wrote a recent statement calling for a black alumni network after talking about protests and events at the university. More than 1,000 alumni attached their names to the statement.

The statement says an official black alumni chapter would help alumni stay connected to undergraduate students.

The alumni association previously had a black alumni group, which formed in 1979 and became inactive in the mid-2000s.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have found two batches of homemade alcohol in the kitchen of the Saline County Jail.

The Salina Journal reports the alcohol was found this week.

Saline County Sheriff’s Capt. Brent Melander says officials found a dispenser filled with about two gallons of clear, homemade liquor during an inspection Monday.

And on Tuesday, jail officials found a mustard jar of homemade wine inside a tea dispenser. Crushed tomatoes were still fermenting inside the jar with a rubber glove attached to the top of the jar to help the fermentation process.

Melander says charges aren’t likely, but the inmate suspected of making the liquor has lost some privileges.

The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission says Randle was asked to leave the Kansas Star casino in Mulvane on Tuesday night after causing some unspecified concerns. Randle left, but returned and got into a scuffle with security.

The Sumner County attorney’s office said Wednesday that no formal charges have been filed, and he remains jailed on a $25,000 bond.

He was booked on suspicion of criminal threat, assault of a law enforcement officer, battery, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Randle was suspended four games by the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy earlier this month, one week after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys.

Highway Patrol: Bus driver to blame for wreck near Hiawatha

bus-878697_1920HIAWATHA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a school bus driver is to blame for a wreck that injured more than 20 students last week.

WIBW-TV reports that the driver failed to stop at an intersection south of Hiawatha on Nov. 18. Highway Patrol says the driver was attempting to turn onto the highway when the bus went off the side of the road and rolled one time.

Investigators did not find any mechanical problems with the bus and cited the cause of the crash as “driver error.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Highway Patrol will turn their findings over to the Brown County Attorney’s Office to see if charges are warranted.

Columbia Planned Parenthood halts medically-induced abortions

Planned Parenthood logoCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia has stopped performing medically-induced abortions.

The Columbia Tribune reports that the clinic ceased offering the abortions Monday. At issue is a University of Missouri medical committee’s decision to drop so-called “refer and follow” privileges, effective Dec. 1.

The privileges are significant because they’d been granted to a Planned Parenthood doctor and played a role in the Columbia clinic obtaining a license to begin offering abortions in August. State law requires physicians or centers providing abortions to have certain agreements with local hospitals for patient care.

Planned Parenthood supporters plan to hold a vigil Monday and then march to an administration building. They’re hoping to pressure interim Chancellor Hank Foley into canceling or delaying the end of “refer and follow” privileges.

Review of Nebraska prison sentences finds 1,242 with errors

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services patchLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A review of Nebraska prison sentences has found that nearly one in four inmates received sentences that were too short or too long because of errors in how “good time” credit was applied  The Department of Correctional Services said Tuesday that credits were not appropriately applied for 1,242 of the 5,258 inmates who qualified for the credit.

Corrections officials say 518 of those affected were not awarded credits they had earned, while 724 received credits in error. Of the 724, there were 446 that were released early, and six of those committed a crime during the time they would have been incarcerated.

Director Scott Frakes announced the review in June to clear up lingering problems with the department’s procedures. Frakes says the prisons now use software to verify sentences.

Recording shows tension between gubernatorial candidates

recordingST. LOUIS (AP) — An audio recording has captured a heated phone call between two Republican gubernatorial candidates.

Former Navy SEAL officer Eric Greitens is heard calling St. Louis businessman John Brunner a “weasel,” ”coward,” ”corrupt” and a liar on the Nov. 14 recording.

Brunner spends much of the conversation appealing for calm. At one point, Brunner says men “don’t call people names.” He added that they “talk face to face.”

Brunner campaign manager Mike Hafner said the call was recorded because an earlier call from Greitens was “bordering on a threatening nature.”

Greitens’ campaign says the candidate wasn’t aware the conversation was being recorded. But Greitens Campaign Manager Austin Chambers said in a statement that the recording shows “Greitens is disgusted by sleazy politics.”

19 people in 7 states ill in E. coli outbreak tied to Costco

Costco Gold Star Member logoSEATTLE (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 19 people in seven states have contracted E. coli in an outbreak linked to Costco chicken salad.

The strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can be life-threatening. No deaths have been reported, but the CDC says five people have been hospitalized and two have developed a type of kidney failure.

The CDC and state health officials are investigating. They don’t know what ingredient in the rotisserie chicken salad made and sold in Costco Wholesale stores is the likely source of the outbreak.

Health officials advise those who bought chicken salad at any U.S. Costco store on or before Friday to throw it away, even if no one has gotten sick.

People have fallen ill in California, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
