CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — The governing board of Southeast Missouri State University has given the school’s president a contract extension.

The (Cape Girardeau) Southeast Missourian reports that the university’s board of regents unanimously voted Monday to offer Carlos Vargas-Aburto a new, three-year contract. He’s been the university’s president since July 2015.

The university says no salary increase or additional compensation was included at this time. The board last year set Vargas’ salary at $278,000 for the new fiscal year beginning July 1, with an annual annuity of $30,000.

The new contract runs through June 30, 2020.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Florida-based provider of workers’ compensation care management services is launching new operations in southwest Missouri’s Springfield, producing at least 100 full-time local jobs.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that One Call Care Management of Jacksonville, Florida, will be located in August in the 65,000-square-foot former UnitedHealthcare site.

One Call’s vice president of marketing, Laura Land, says the Springfield operations will be largely a call center.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A sinkhole has opened up and swallowed a car in downtown St. Louis.

There have been no injuries reported resulting from the sinkhole that appeared shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday.

Aerial TV footage shows the white car on its side in the hole, with water gushing from a below-ground pipe.

The car’s owners told television station KMOV that they were returning from a gym when they found their car in the crater.

It isn’t immediately clear what caused the collapse.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Two southwestern Missouri people have been sentenced to federal prison and ordered to repay roughly $24,000 for their roles in a scheme to cash checks stolen from mailboxes.

Twenty-six-year-old D.J. Gideon of Republic was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in prison. Twenty-two-year-old Katelyn Emrick of Ava received a prison term of six years and three months.

Both pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say the scheme took place over several months in 2015 and victimized 15 households, two dozen businesses, 16 financial institutions, a church and a charity organization.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City, Missouri, man is jailed on $150,000 bond after being accused of a drug-related shooting death of a man he thought was a demon.

Jackson County prosecutors charged 30-year-old Prince Conrad with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in Monday’s death of 45-year-old Willie Reaws III.

Authorities allege in court records that Conrad shot Reaws in the head after they snorted methamphetamine in a home’s basement.

Investigators say Conrad told police he thought Reaws was a demon, took took a handgun out of Reaws’ pocket and tried to shoot him, but Conrad shot himself in the leg instead. Authorities allege Conrad said he then shot Reaws at the victim’s request.

Online court records don’t show whether Conrad has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man who spent nearly two decades in mental hospitals after entering a disputed plea in the 1997 sexual assault of a teenager has been cleared after retesting of genetic evidence excluded him as a suspect. Jasper County’s prosecutor dropped the case against 58-year-old Mike Wilkerson last Friday, citing recent DNA testing of a cigarette butt and a condom found at the scene.

The victim, who was then age 17, said she was attacked in her home and identified Wilkerson from a photo lineup.

Wilkerson had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and was ordered committed indefinitely to mental hospitals. But a judge last year threw out that plea, leading to Wilkerson being freed on bond pending a new trial and to prosecutors taking a fresh look at the evidence.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The state of Kansas says its divorce rate has dropped to the lowest levels since it began keeping yearly records in 1966.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment says last year’s divorce rate fell to 2.6 per 1,000 persons. There were 7,198 divorces statewide in 2016.

The department says that for much of the 1970s and 1980s, the divorce rate was above 5 per every 1,000 population.

The department offered no explanation for last year’s decline.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state officials are trying to contact more than 430 parents who are owed child support after discovering that the Department of Health and Human Services didn’t send payments in a timely manner.

Department officials acknowledged Wednesday that some unpaid money has sat in a state account for years — as far back as 1998.

The cases involve divorced parents whose children were in state custody, mostly in foster care. The state collected child support payments from non-custodial parents and used it to pay for services they received from the department, including foster care.

Excess money was supposed to go to the court-ordered payee, usually the custodial parent, but the money remained in a state account.

Officials are sending letters to 431 parents who are collectively owed about $250,000.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A federal prosecutor in Kansas who said in court last year that she never listened to attorney-client phone calls at the Leavenworth Detention Center has left the U.S. Attorney’s Office after admitting to her supervisor that she did listen to the calls.

The Kansas City Star reports court documents filed June 19 show that Erin Tomasic told her supervisor she listened to the recorded phone conversations of two inmates and their attorneys. The prosecutors notified a judge in May that Tomasic was no longer working for the U.S. Attorney.

Days after Tomasic left her job, U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson expanded an investigation into the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas City, Kansas. The judge cited ongoing problems with the prosecutors’ “inconsistent” statements and the destruction of “critical evidence.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens is vetoing the use of state funding to help build an arts campus in downtown Kansas City.

Greitens in a Wednesday statement said taxpayer money should not be used to help pay for the $96 million University of Missouri-Kansas City arts campus.

Missouri lawmakers in April passed a measure to issue up to $48 million in state bonds to cover half the cost of the arts campus.

The university already has made other plans to pay for the campus.

University of Missouri Board of Curators and System President Mun Choi said earlier Wednesday that the system no longer is counting on the state funding. University officials said the system will develop alternative funding plans that will be presented at the curators’ meeting in September.
