Corps: Recent Rain Helps Navigation, But Won’t Change Conservation Plans

USACE
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The recent rains along the upper Missouri River won’t change the plan to conserve water in the river’s reservoirs but they will help improve navigation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Monday the river basin is still recovering from last year’s drought.

In June, the rain that fell north of Sioux City was slightly above normal.

But officials predict the amount of runoff flowing into the river this year will still be only about 88 percent of normal.

So the amount of water being released from the Gavins Point dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border will remain around 21,000 cubic feet per second.

But the Corps now expects to be able to provide enough water for a full navigation season on the river.

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — Some 40 people are still missing, two days after a runaway oil tanker train ignited explosions and fires in the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic.

Five people have been confirmed dead, but officials say the death toll is likely to rise. All but one of the train’s 73 tanker cars were carrying oil when they somehow came loose early Saturday morning.

Police Lieutenant Michel Brunet would not say how many people might be missing after the 73-car train derailed early Saturday in the town of Lac-Megantic, about 155 miles east of Montreal.

Officials say the explosions and fire destroyed a large part of the town’s downtown area. Up to 1,000 people were forced from their homes in the town.

Witnesses say the eruptions sent many local residents scrambling through the streets under the intense heat of towering fireballs and a red glow that illuminated the night sky.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — It’s unclear what caused Saturday’s crash-landing of an international jetliner at San Francisco’s airport, but passengers and witnesses say the plane appeared to come in too low and may have clipped a seawall at the end of the runway.

Asiana Airlines describes the pilots as a “skilled,” veteran crew, three of them with more than 10,000 hours each of flight time and a fourth with 5,000.

Chinese state media are identifying the two people killed in the crash as a pair of 16-year-old girls from a school in eastern China. Their bodies were found outside the wreckage of the jumbo jet.

More than 180 people were taken to hospitals with injuries, 49 of them critical.

The flight originated in Shanghai, with a stop in Seoul, South Korea. There were 16 crew members and 291 passengers aboard, including 61 Americans and 141 Chinese, about half of them students and teachers.

A National Transportation Safety Board team is investigating the cause.

Purse-Snatcher Also Steals Dead Man’s Ashes

urnWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita woman wants the thief who stole her purse to know she was also robbed of a very special possession: an urn with her father’s ashes.

Melissa Stout says her purse was stolen from her car when she and her family were downtown Thursday night to watch fireworks.

Stout says she has carried the ashes with her since her father died four years ago.

She thought she was keeping them safe. She says everything else in the purse can be replaced, but the urn is priceless.

Stout says she’s concerned that whoever took her belongings may have dumped the urn in the trash, which she says doesn’t seem right.
