The St. Joseph City Council has snuffed out a proposal to put a smoking ban up for a public vote.

The City Council voted Tuesday to remove the proposed smoking ban from its agenda.

Disagreements surfaced over allowing an exemption for the St Jo Frontier Casino.

After six months of debate the council was considering putting the proposed ban on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Council member Jeff Penland said he couldn’t vote for a ban that treated the St. Jo Frontier Casino differently than other city businesses.

Casino manager Craig Travers told the council that if the ban was enacted, the state would sell the parent company’s license to a community with no smoking ban and stop all discussions of moving the casino downtown.

Dwarf Wrestling Under Fire In Iowa

dwarf wrestlingAn Iowa bar’s plan to host a wrestling show that will include two dwarfs has drawn some complaints.

The show would be presented as thousands of bicyclists roll through town in July during RAGBRAI, or the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.

Brian Filloon owns the Longest Yard Sports Grill in Dallas Center, Iowa.

Filloon says he was “just looking for something different for entertainment.”

Filloon says he’s been invited to attend a meeting with the Dallas Center City Council on Tuesday night to discuss his bar’s plans.

City Councilman Terry Gibson says the dwarf wrestling could cast Dallas Center in a negative light. He says it sounds “more like a carnival event – not an afternoon, evening community event.”

Help Track Smallmouth Bass

MDC logo
Missouri conservation officials want help from anglers who catch smallmouth bass in certain Ozark streams.

The Conservation Department said in a release that people who fish selected Ozark streams can help with a research project by reporting their catches of tagged smallmouth bass.

Bass season for Ozark streams opened Friday and runs through Feb. 28.

The department will use the project information to help manage bass habitat and harvest. The tagging effort involves MDC staff catching and tagging wild smallmouth bass to learn more about angler catch rates and fish movement in the Black River, Castor River, Courtois Creek, Current River and the North Fork of the White River.

Each tag has a phone number that anglers are asked to call and provide the information about the catch.

Some Kansas Lawmakers Refusing Overtime Pay

Kansas Capitol(AP) – Some Kansas lawmakers have decided to turn down additional pay as the Legislature heads past its 90-day session limit.

Day 90 was Thursday, which means legislators will go past their limit, as they have in 32 of the past 40 years. Last year’s session went 99 days. But each extra day of the session is estimated to cost taxpayers $45,000.

A list provided by Legislative Administrative Services shows that five of 40 senators and 17 of 125 House members have declined their legislative salaries after 90 days. Two Republican lawmakers – Senator Vicki Schmidt and Representative Shanti Gandhi, both of Topeka – have also declined their per diem.

Representative Brandon Whipple, a Wichita Democrats, tells constituents he’d donate the rest of his salary to charity.
