13 students and driver hurt in bus wreck near St. Louis

school busST. LOUIS (AP) — Authorities say 13 children and a bus driver are injured after a school bus swerved to avoid an accident, drove over a guardrail and down a steep embankment near St. Louis.

The bus crash happened about 8 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 44 as it ferried students from St. Louis to a school in St. Louis County.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum says a car struck the median and spun toward the bus. It isn’t clear if the vehicles collided, but the bus swerved and ended up about 15 feet down a hill.

The bus driver is hospitalized with moderate injuries. St. Louis Children’s Hospital spokeswoman Abby Wuellner says all 13 children are being evaluated but that none of their injuries appears to be life-threatening.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Missouri state records show an emaciated boy whose father later killed him and fed his remains to the family’s pigs told authorities he was being abused.

Adrian Jones was 5 years old in July 2013 when he told a Missouri Children’s Division worker and police officer that a “little bone come out” when his father kicked him in the head. Two years later, Adrian was dead.

Adrian’s father and stepmother, Michael and Heather Jones, are serving life sentences in his death.

The records released this week show Missouri welfare officials said in 2013 that they didn’t think they could ensure Adrian’s safety at home, but that a county juvenile officer suggested the family be provided more services. The family then moved to Kansas.

Similar records remain under seal in Kansas, where welfare officials have said allegations against the family were “thoroughly investigated.”

Aetna leaving Affordable Care Act market in Nebraska

healthcare, doctorOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Aetna Health says it will be leaving the individual health plan market in Nebraska.

Aetna had sold policies in only four states this year after quitting 11 states last year, and last month it announced it was pulling out of Iowa and Virginia.

Aetna’s decision leaves only Medica Health in Nebraska’s Affordable Care Act market, and Medica officials said Wednesday that the company had not yet decided whether to remain in the Nebraska market.

Nebraska Insurance Department director Bruce Ramge has said that if no companies participate in the Nebraska exchange next year, it could mean that people who qualify for tax credits don’t get them, although they would still have to find insurance to fulfill the individual mandate should it still be in effect.

Prosecutor: Remove Missouri sheriff involved in inmate death

corrections-70322_960_720ST. LOUIS (AP) — Missouri’s top prosecutor says a sheriff participated in a jail altercation in which an inmate died and that he should be fired.

Attorney General Josh Hawley says in a news release that he filed a request in court Tuesday to remove Cory Hutcheson from his position as sheriff of Mississippi County.

Hawley says his office is investigating the inmate’s death Friday. Details haven’t been released.

Hutcheson’s sheriff’s license was suspended last month after his arrest on 18 criminal charges, including three linked to allegations that he handcuffed a 77-year-old woman with such force that she suffered a heart attack.

The sheriff’s department hasn’t returned a message seeking comment.

Hutcheson’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, says he’s reviewing the request but doesn’t think anything about the sheriff’s conduct would warrant his removal.

Branstad signs fireworks bill

fireworks-1116607_1280DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has legalized the sale of bottle rockets, roman candles and most other consumer fireworks, sparking enthusiasm from vendors eager to expand into the state.

Branstad signed a bill Tuesday approved by the Legislature that allows sales between June 1 and July 8 as well as from Dec. 10 to Jan. 3.

Iowa has long been among the few states that ban the sale and use of most fireworks. Several vendors now are scrambling to sell fireworks in Iowa.

Under the law, cities and counties may forbid the use of fireworks, but they cannot prohibit their sale. However, local governments can control locations of firework sales.

Firework sales in Iowa are expected to bring in about $1.5 million in sales tax revenue for the 2018 fiscal year.
