Northwest volleyball falls in four sets to No. 6 Central Missouri

Fighting an uphill battle the Northwest Missouri State volleyball team gave 6th-ranked Central Missouri all they could handle Wednesday night before falling 3-1 in MIAA action.

Northwest saw its three-game winning streak end as they fell to 14-14 on the season and 8-7 in the MIAA. The Jennies improved to 21-4 overall and 13-1 in league play and still sit tied at the top of the conference.

From the opening serve the Bearcats gave UCM all they could manage before falling 25-22, 17-25, 28-26, 25-18. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first three sets that saw the Bearcats steal the second set before dropping an exciting third set that witnessed 14 ties and five different lead changes.

Sophomores Brooke Bartosh and Abby Graves each finished with 12 kills to pace Northwest as the Bearcats held UCM to a .168 hitting percentage.

Julia Bates recorded a double-double for the Jennies with 37 assists and 10 digs to pace UCM.

The Bearcats take the weekend off before facing their second top 10 next Tuesday when they travel to 4th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney. First serve from Kearney is set for 4 p.m.

Royals make trade with Angels for starting pitcher Ervin Santana

The Kansas City Royals announced Wednesday that the club has acquired right-handed starting pitcher Ervin Santana and cash from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Brandon Sisk.

“We’ve stated all along that starting pitching was a priority this off-season and acquiring someone with the resume of Ervin Santana immediately upgrades our rotation,” said Royals GM Dayton Moore.  “At just 29 years old, he has 96 major league wins, is a proven innings eater and most importantly, he competes.  Ervin has been an All-Star, has pitched in the post-season and has at least 16 wins in three different years, all of which adds a winning mindset to our clubhouse.”

The 29-year-old Santana, an American League All-Star in 2008, is 96-80 with a 4.33 ERA in 236 career Major League appearances (233 starts), all coming with the Angels since his debut in 2005.  The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander was 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA in 30 starts in 2012, finishing the season with a 3.63 ERA in his final 10 starts, allowing 45 hits over 62.0 innings with 55 strikeouts against 16 walks.  He authored a one-hit shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 16 in Anaheim, joining Nolan Ryan and the only two Angels pitchers to have a no-hitter and a one-hitter.

Santana has topped the 200-innings mark in three of the last five seasons, including combining for 629.1 innings since 2010.  He has allowed fewer hits (1,444) than innings pitched (1,475.2) over his career and posted a combined opponent batting average of .240 over the last two seasons.  Santana has a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.46 and has never posted a season below 2.00 in his career.  He tossed a no-hitter on July 27, 2011 at Cleveland, allowing an unearned run in a 3-1 victory and recorded 11 double-digit strikeout games in his career to this point.

Sisk, 27, signed with the Royals as a minor league free agent on July 8, 2008.  The left-handed reliever went 3-2 with eight saves and compiled a 2.54 ERA in 50 outings with Omaha (AAA) in 2012.

MWSU volleyball loses to No. 15 Truman State, 3-1

The Missouri Western volleyball team played No. 15 Truman State close Tuesday night at the MWSU Fieldhouse, but came up short, losing 3-1.

Missouri Western started out with the lead in the first set, claiming a 3-0 and 6-1 set. The Griffons continued their momentum throughout the beginning of the set, but fell behind late as Truman State came back to take a 22-21 lead.
The Bulldogs won the first set 25-22 to take a 1-0 lead.

MWSU kept the same mentality going into the second set, and took control early on. The Griffons didn’t trail the entire set, and only tied twice. After a 3-3 tie, Jessie Thorup broke the set open with a kill to take a one point lead, and the Griffons led from there.

They eventually won 25-19 to tie the match at one set apiece.

The Griffons couldn’t win the third set but kept it close. The teams battled back and forth before Truman won 25-22 to push its lead to 2 sets to 1 heading into the fourth.

The final set of the evening went to the Bulldogs as they won 25-15 to complete the 3-1 victory.

Thorup led the Griffons in kills with 10. Stephanie Hattey had a team-high 26 assists. The Griffons finished with 12 blocks, including four from Meredith McCormick.

Up Next: The Griffons play Friday night against Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

Kansas wins exhibition against Emporia State

Freshman Perry Ellis was perfect from the floor in his first outing inside Allen Fieldhouse to guide the Kansas men’s basketball team to its 60th exhibition victory, topping Emporia State, 88-54, Tuesday night.

KU improved to 3-2 in exhibition play, counting the Jayhawks’ games against the Swiss National Team and AMW France. The Jayhawks moved to 60-9 all-time in exhibition games, and in his 30th exhibition game at Kansas, head coach Bill Self moved to 28-2 in preseason play. The 10-year head coach introduced a new look to his starting lineup as the Jayhawks unofficially kicked off the 2012-13 season at home.

In their first opportunity to crack the starting five, freshmen Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor did so. They joined veteran starters in senior center Jeff Withey and redshirt senior guard Travis Releford along with sophomore guard Naadir Tharpe.

KU’s leading scorers, however, came off the bench. Ellis was the first to check in for the Jayhawks, the first to double digits and ended the night with a team-high 15 points. Senior guard Elijah Johnson was the second sub of the evening and turned in a 12-point effort.

Every available Jayhawk saw playing time on Tuesday night, 11 of which scored. Aside from Ellis and Johnson, McLemore and White III chalked up double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman forward Landen Lucas led the Jayhawks on the boards with nine, while Johnson dished out a team-best five assists.

Emporia State dropped its second exhibition contest Tuesday night and was led by junior forward Gavin Brown’s 14 points. Freshman guard Terrance Moore, a high school teammate of KU’s Ellis, was the only other Hornet to hit double figures as he added 10 points.

McLemore wasted no time getting to the basket, taking a pass from Tharpe for a dunk just 10 seconds into the game. It was the Hornets, however, who got off to the early start. The visiting squad came out firing, making three of its first four attempts – including two three-point baskets – to jump out to a 10-4 lead. After McLemore’s early bucket, the Jayhawks wouldn’t lead again until the 11:03 mark following Johnson’s first three of the game.

Once KU fell behind in the early minutes, freshmen duo Ellis and Andrew White III checked in to combine for eight quick points to knot the score, 12-12. Back-to-back threes from Johnson and McLemore handed the Jayhawks the 19-14 lead and the home team ran with it. By the time Tharpe downed his second three-pointer in a 40-second span, Kansas had ignited for a 19-1 run with seven minutes to play in the opening half.

Up 31-15, freshman guard Rio Adams connected on his first unofficial points as a Jayhawk, knocking down his second of two free throws, while a breakaway dunk for Releford pushed the Kansas lead over the 20-point margin. Heading into the final media timeout of the first half, the Jayhawks held a comfortable 38-17 lead.

Although ESU went 3-for-4 in the opening minutes, Kansas held the Hornets to a mere 5-for-23 mark for the remainder of the first half. Conversely, the Jayhawks finished the opening frame shooting 55 percent, led by Ellis and Tharpe who contributed eight points apiece. The Jayhawks took a 42-21 lead into halftime.

Withey, who was quiet in the first half with a single bucket, scored the first five points in the second half. The senior completed a three-point play and took a well-placed pass from Johnson under the basket got the offense out to a smooth start. Traylor sprinted down the floor for a two-handed fast-break dunk to send KU over the 50-point mark with 15 minutes remaining.

Grabbing his own rebound, Ellis was fouled as he drilled an impressive jumper fading away from the basket. He converted the three-point play to become the first Jayhawk in double-digits for the night. Ellis was quickly joined in double figures by McLemore and Johnson as Kansas surged ahead, 70-36, approaching the eight-minute media timeout.

As Self checked multiple combinations of players into the game, KU received late buckets from White and Lucas to end the night shooting 54 percent as a team and cruise to the 88-54 victory.

K-State cruises past Washburn for exhibition victory

Kansas State opened the Bruce Weber era with a win Tuesday night, beating Washburn, 81-61 in exhibition play.

The Wildcats had four players finish with double digit scoring totals, with sophomore Nino Williams leading the charge with a game high 14. Senior Jordan Henriquez added 13 points along with nine rebounds to just miss posting a double-double.

The Wildcats looked impressive early, racing out with a 19-0 run to take a 28-7 lead in the opening seven minutes of the first half. Near the end of the half, K-State went on another run, this time a 12-5 run to go into halftime leading 50-30. Williams scored 10 of his points in the first half, while bringing in six rebounds. Senior guard Rodney McGruder added a pair of 3-pointers in the half. The Wildcats shot an outstanding 54.5 percent from the floor.

A slow start in the second half, saw the Ichabods cut the lead to 13 points, after a pair of free throws from Christian Ulsaker. With the score sitting at 53-40 in favor of the Wildcats, the home team used yet another run to extend its lead to 66-41 and hold a 25-point advantage. From that point on, the Wildcats were able to switch to cruise control for the remainder of the game. Freshman D.J. Johnson was impressive in his Wildcat debut, scoring 10 points while adding seven rebounds.

With the win, K-State improves to 53-18 in exhibition games including 41-9 at home.

Bench depth proved to be a factor Tuesday night as the Wildcats bench outscored more than half the team’s points with 44. Washburn’s bench contributed 30 points.

K-State returns to action on Sunday, as the Wildcats play host to Emporia State in their final exhibition game of the season. The game is set for a 1 p.m. tipoff and can be seen on K-StateHD.TV.
