Missouri State will not pursue postseason invitations

Although the opportunity to play in the postseason for a third straight season was a possibility for the Missouri State University men’s basketball program, Director of Athletics Kyle Moats announced Monday (March 5), the Bears will not participate in the College Basketball Invitational or CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

“Our coaches can immediately begin working with our returning players, focusing on recruiting and concentrating on our academic responsibilities,” Moats explained. “Investing our resources in these areas is a better fit for our current situation.”

Under first-year head coach Paul Lusk, the Bears finished the season 16-16 overall and tied for third in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-9 record. MSU, which was picked sixth in this year’s MVC preseason poll after returning just 38.7 percent of its scoring from the 2011 MVC championship team, is expected to return eight active players, two redshirt players and 52.1 percent of its total points for the 2012-13 campaign.

The four-man senior class includes three-time All-MVC standout Kyle Weems, the program’s No. 2 career scorer (1,868 points) and the only man in MVC history to record 1,800 points, 800 rebounds and 200 three-pointers. Caleb Patterson, who was second on the club at 12.2 points per game, Michael Bizoukas, the MVC leader in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio, and Isaiah Rhine, who played 105 career games, round out the list of 2011-12 seniors.

The Bears won the CIT in 2010 before advancing to the second round of the 2011 National Invitation Tournament a year ago.

Bearcats rally past SBU to win MIAA Tournament opener

Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team trailed the first 26 minutes of the game against Southwest Baptist Friday night at Municipal Auditorium.

Part of it for the Northwest Bearcats was early-game jitters of playing in their first MIAA Tournament since 2008. Another part was SBU continued its hot outside shooting from a week and a half ago when Baptist drained all seven three-pointers in the second half against Northwest.

But in the second half, Northwest gave SBU a nasty dose of three-point fever that was just too hot for the Baptist Bearcats to handle.

The barrage of three-pointers by Northwest midway through the second half carried the team to a 74-62 victory.

“Once we got past the first 15 minutes of the game we started to lock in defensively and offensively, we started to get some penetration and pitch. We played our game after that,” said Northwest coach Ben McCollum.

Northwest, 22-5, will play Pittsburg State, 16-13 in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. The Bearcats beat the Gorillas twice during the regular season.

For a while, it appeared No. 6 SBU, which ended its season at 18-12, were poised to make a Cinderella run in the tournament. SBU made the first bucket in the second half and held a 35-29 lead.

A couple of minutes later, Northwest began its climb to the lead with a traditional three-point play. Senior Jake Reinders grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in and was fouled. He made the free throw to pull Northwest within one at 35-34.

Still, the Northwest could not quite take the next step and move ahead. It finally occurred with 13:53 left when Alex Sullivan, using his old school set shot, drained a three-pointer that gave Northwest a 40-39 lead.

“We put an emphasis on just doing what we are capable of doing and staying within ourselves and sticking to our strengths,” said Sullivan, who finished with 13 points.

Baptist responded with a three-pointer and then went ice cold from behind the arc.

Northwest got blistering hot from downtown. First, Reinders gave Northwest the lead for good at 42-41with an inside bucket.

With 11:50 left, Sullivan hit a three-pointer and then hit another one that pushed Northwest’s lead to 50-43.

Baptist never recovered.

Northwest never gave Baptist a chance to recover, especially when Haake made a three-pointer to make it 53-45.

Northwest took its first double-digit lead at 61-50 with about 6 minutes left on another three-pointer by Justin Clark.

Meanwhile, Baptist kept clanking three-pointers.

“It was a lot of fun tonight,” Sullivan said. “I was getting open looks. Coach said to shoot it when I’m open. I just try to keep simple. When I keep my game simple, good things happen.”

Northwest went seven for 10 beyond the arc in the second half and Baptist was a woeful one for 13 for 7.7 percent in the second half.

“Coach challenged us at halftime to come out and shut those guys down,” said Reinders, who finished with 11 points. “When we played them last time they really took it to us. We wanted to play with a chip on our shoulders.”

For the most part, Northwest kept pace with SBU from the three-point arc in the first half. Baptist made five in nine tries and Northwest hit four in nine attempts.

The problem for Northwest was the inside play of Robson Memnon. He scored four times in the paint and even made a three-pointer. His 11 points in the first 20 minutes helped Baptist take a 32-27 halftime lead.

The early miscues contributed to the Bearcats’ 12-5 deficit. A couple of three-pointers by Haake relaxed Northwest as it closed to 14-13.

“I felt there was some (jitters), but the team that we are, I knew we would overcome it,” said DeShaun Cooper, who finished with 17 points. “I was ready for everybody to come together and now it is time to play.”

Northwest, though, never tied or took a lead in the first half. And when Memnon got in an inside groove, SBU built a 30-22 lead late in the first half.

A jumper by Tyler Funk followed by a three-pointer by Clark pulled Northwest to within three at 30-27.

Northwest baseball run-rules Fort Hays State, 29-3

After struggling to score runs last season the Northwest Missouri State baseball team has found its offensive swing in 2012. The offensive production was more evident than ever Friday afternoon as the Bearcats pounded eight home runs to rout Fort Hays State 29-3 in MIAA action setting a school record for runs scored in the process.

Northwest who improved to 2-7 overall, more importantly jumped to a 1-0 record in MIAA play. The Tigers fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA after today’s conference opener for both teams.

FHSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a home run, but Bearcat starter Chris Green would put the clamp down on the Tigers’ bats. Green moved to 2-0 on the year as he scattered seven hits over the seven inning complete game win.

After Jake Kretzer was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning Travis Green would connect on the first of three home runs on the day. Northwest would bat around in the inning scoring two more runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Eric McGlauflin. McGlauflin also had a career day going 6-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

The four-run second inning would just be the start of things to come in a record setting day for the Bearcats.

With one out, Travis Green doubled down the left field line as Jon Pomatto homered in the gap to left center extending the Northwest lead to 6-1. Green had one of the more outstanding performances, not just of the day, but of a Bearcat in recent history. He finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBIs and three home runs.

After Pomatto’s homer, Cameron Bedard would blast a home run to left just two batters later and Travis Green would add his second bomb of the day with two outs closing out the inning. In all the Bearcats tallied nine runs on six hits with only one FHSU error in the third inning alone.

The Bearcats would add two more runs in the fourth inning on an Eric Swain home run.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers would scratch out their final two runs of the day on three hits.

Northwest would go on to add four runs in the fifth inning, three more in the third and seven runs in the seventh to close out a 29-3 win. Even with the Bearcats 24 hits they stranded 13 runners in the record setting win.

The previous record for runs in a game was 28 as they first set the record in 1990 against Missouri Western. The Bearcats had duplicated the record in 2007 against Minnesota-Crookston.

The Bearcats and Tigers will play a twin bill on Saturday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. The two teams will close out the series on Sunday with a single game slated for noon.

Mizzou finalizes 2012 football schedule

The University of Missouri has finalized its 2012 football schedule, as announced today by Senior Associate Athletic Director Mark Alnutt.  The 12-game slate features seven home contests to be played at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium, marking the first time since 1987 that Mizzou has had a seven-game home schedule.

The final piece to the puzzle was added this week when Mizzou and Syracuse University agreed to a Nov. 17th date in Columbia, Mo.  That closed out Mizzou’s non-conference slate, as the Tigers will open the season Sept. 1st against Southeastern Louisiana, followed by non-conference games against Arizona State at home (Sept. 15th) and at Central Florida (Sept. 29th).  The game against Syracuse is a one-year arrangement, while Central Florida will return a game in Columbia on Sept. 13, 2014.

Interspersed throughout the non-conference action is Mizzou’s much-anticipated inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference.  Tiger fans can plan on attending an historic game on Sept. 8th, when MU plays its first-ever game as an SEC member, when the defending SEC East Division champion Georgia Bulldogs come to Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium.

Mizzou will have a seven-game home schedule, including home SEC games against Georgia, Vanderbilt (Oct. 6th), defending BCS champion Alabama (Oct. 13th), and Kentucky (Oct. 27th – Homecoming).  Conference road games are set with the road opener at South Carolina on Sept. 22nd, followed by road games in three of the final four games of the season – at Florida (Nov. 3rd), at Tennessee (Nov. 10th) and at Texas A&M (Nov. 24th).  In a scheduling oddity, Mizzou’s game at A&M will mark the third straight season the Tigers have played in College Station, Texas.

“We are very pleased to get our schedule finalized, and are excited that we could put this kind of schedule together,” said Alnutt, who oversees the scheduling of football, in conjunction with Head Coach Gary Pinkel.  “This is a schedule that Tiger fans can be excited about, and we’re very fortunate to be able to put such a quality group of opponents together given the challenging timetable we were faced with,” Alnutt said.
